Mine isn't doing it, yet, as far as I can tell (I'll be checking my #5 plug in a hundred miles or so). I was wondering--does there seem to be any common denominator among all the cars that are having detonation problems? For example: build dates (early, mid, late), gas brand, gas octane, engine builders, etc. Or does it seem to be random?

It seems to be pretty random. However, I don't see any of the first ones having the problem.

Mine doesn't have it, and I haven't heard of any earlier then my build having it.

The two dozen or so owners who are dealing with this nasty problem have been frantically trying to determine some commonality for months. They've looked at everything from build dates to engine teams, and so far they haven't been able to come up with a single common link for all their cars. And that is the truly maddening aspect of their situation. Even Ford appears unable to pinpoint the problem.

Man, I really feel for those guys!

I have a slight pinging and am not sure of the build date. Where do I look to determine it? Mine is not all that pronouced but is detectable at times. Heavy acceleration mostly. Is this serious enough to require servicing??????

-I believe that SVT can inform you of the exact build date with your VIN#....if not, perhaps the VIN label on your doorjamb may have that info....it's worth checking out.

-Detonation will damage your engine's internals. Not good at all. Refer to these sites, good pics & examples of what detonation conditions can do to the insides:

Thanks for the information. I read both articles and feel as though I know a little more about detonation, its causes, some solutions, and the resulting damage that can take place as a result of it.

Armed with this knowledge, if I so much as hear a single ping again I will take the car to the dealer and have them work on it.

My car is still under warranty and now would be a good time to get to the bottom of it.

My Cobra has a sticker with a date on it located on the drivers side head, kind of tough to see, look between the fenderwell and the head, it looks like a barcode with a date under it.
