If you put it in the oven you can separate the lens from the housing.

the whole reason i want to replace it is because the shiny reflector/chrome looking part of the housing is black......:fm: so when i hit the brakes its much brighter on the driver side than it is on the passenger side

Since it CAN be separated, do you think a reflector from a regular gt housing can be switched in and reinstalled ?

Yup as long as it has nothing to do with the blinker reflector. Also you have a leak or hole somewhere that's causing air to go in.
There might be a little custom work since I don't think the reflector part just snaps out but it shouldn't be a big issue.
