03's haave stronger halfshafts and I think they may have a litlle bit better bushings. But they both have 31 spline diffs were as 99's have 28.

I saw this a couple of months ago. Credit belongs to SnakeEyes for the information:

The only differences in the IRS from year to year is as follows:

2001 IRS
31 Spline differential and half shafts (99s have 28 spline).

2003 IRS
Stronger half shafts (still 31 spline)
Different flange on the differential
Different cross member to support the differential at the ears.
Inner tie rod mount lowered to improve bump steer
Stiffer bushings
Bilstein shocks
Stiffer stock springs

Everything else is identical across all years.......

so the 01 traction lock had carbon fiber clutches? no

No one is doubting what you said. All I was doing was paraphrasing (hence the "..........") a quote, from someone else, who had responded to what the differences were between the different years IRS's (sp?).

Constant Velocity Joint's. When half-shafts break that's usually where they break. The ones on the '03's are stronger, which is why people who have '99-'01's upgrade to them, like Torch10th said.

Ford should have designed the IRS with a U-Joint much like the vette IRS...much stronger than CV's

The designer of the IRS was required by Ford to design an independent rear that would fit in the space the stick axle occupied.

Um wow. Are you serious? I woulda thought they woulda built it wider for more grip.....

I'm sure if they had more time they coulda done a setup like the vette.
