Hey everyone, looking for some potential suggestions.
With a freshly built / forged engine, I was checking on some angles on the best way prime the engine to begin building oil pressure before the first initial fire up?

All help would be appreciated.

I used a pump up sprayer hooked to the oil filter adapter when I built mine years ago. Won't build pressure but will get oil to all the important bits.

Thanks Gentlemen! I have researched a bit, and the pump that connects to the oil filter adapter, then the component that bullitt1448 posted I see can work. But with my tubular front end from maximum motorsports, and running an oil filter relocation kit, and obviously factory oil cooler, seems tough.
I’m also running a return style fuel system, and have found that keeping the power off from the pumps (similar to powering off the inertia switch with the factory fuel system), I can crank the engine till I get oil pressure. Then put power to the fuel pumps.

Any other input?

Yes sir, and not to mention the assembly lube used during the assembly.

Thank you Sir! So to triple check, you’re saying, from my mention previously. Keeping power off to the pumps, cranking the engine till oil pressure comes up, then obviously powering the pumps to initially start the engine…this is a good approach?

Thank you again for the help, much appreciated!

the instructions that came with my motor from MPR racings engines says NOT to use the starter to try and build oil pressure as it wont properly lube the top end. I used the previously mentioned garden sprayer method.

How long ago was it assembled? If it hasnt been long Id let the assembly lube do its job and fire it off

I assembled it back in 2009. Getting married, buying a house, and having Kids placed the build on hold.
Any place to get these pumps / sprayers?

i picked up everything from lowes - cheapest garden sprayer, some clear hose, the brass npt fitting (barb on one side, npt for the oil pressure sensor port on the other) and 2 hose clamps for the clear line.

Last time I built an engine I kept the gas pedal floored for a few seconds to shut off the injectors while cranking then lifted my foot and let the engine fire up. When I pulled that engine apart the bearings looked fine. I think I also had straight 30w conventiontal in it. But it's been so long I don't remember. I usually do an oil change right after the first start up anyway.

Next time around I plan on doing the garden sprayer to get oil through everything, then I'll do the pedal trick again.

YMMV.

For what it's worth, when I installed a Brenspeed motor, they didn't recommend any special priming for first startup. The explanation was that in the couple seconds you're cranking over the motor, before it starts, oil will make it's way where it needs to be. Take it for what it's worth.

Note, they did recommend an oil change after an initial startup and idle. When I dropped the oil, there wasn't a speck in it.

Thank you! Can you elaborate on the NPT fitting (how it looks and connects) and how the sprayer actually hooks up, and how the process works?
Also, approximately how much oil is pumped in and how do you know the process is complete? Sorry for all the questions!
Thank you again!

Sorry, I didn’t quote your reply, with all my latest questions.
Thank you everyone for the help!

here's another recent thread about this, with a couple more videos from the modularheadshop and melling. most of the stuff i've read says that using the starter alone doesn't spin the pump fast enough to get the oil everywhere you want. not to say you won't be okay if you do this, but i'd rather play it safe.

i've used the garden sprayer method on the 3 engines i've done so far and it seems to work well. you really can tell it's filling up all the stuff in the top end. i also bought a M22x1.5 plug so that nothing pushes out of the filter area in the opposite direction, but it's probably not necessary. best of luck with it!

Click the link, should take you directly to a post in that thread with a video on the pump sprayer method
Thank you Gentleman! With my tubular front end (Maximum Motorsports), the oil filter won’t bolt on until my MM oil filter re-location arrives. Is there a fitting that threads over where the oil filter threads on normally off the cooler, to block off the hole?
