You guy's are F'n crazy. There aint a road in this entire state that I would trust to do that on. The fastest I have ever piloted anything to was 171 MPH and that was on a buddies R1, but it only took like 45 seconds to go that fast on that thing. When I lifted my head just a little bit from behind the wind screen, I felt like I was gonna get ripped off the bike. That was enough for me.
There is no road straight enough, long enough, safe enough or in good enough shape in the entire state of NJ to go that fast in a car and not be dead when it's over.
Being somewhat knowledgeable in vehicle dynamics and coefficient drag factors, I'd be very leery of a Cobra's ability to sustain speeds over 160 and still maintain stability under breaking, even slight movement or continuous acceleration. BE CAREFUL doing this guys, the stock suspension and aerodynamics just can't support that kind of speed for any length of time.

To all those listing how fast you've gone on the freeway or some other public road, please check out the Silver State Classic Challenge. With the right safety equipment you can go that fast in a much safer environment and have your speed documented. It's lot safer and it's a lot cheaper than a speeding ticket.
I've had the front end get light going into a curve at 165 and believe me, I was real glad I didn't have to worry about a car full of people coming the other way.

Check out their website. I'd be real happy to see more Mustangs at the event. I'm tired of being out numbered by Corvettes!

Hitting a June bug at those speeds would be the same as a 12 gauge slug.

Looking through the posts in that thread, looks like many of the posters are no longer active. Memories!

Old ass thread.

Nice to see some are still around.
I just completed a run at the Silver State Classic and was looking on the internet if there was an article on how fast a stock 03/04 Cobra was supposed to go. One of the hits I got was this old post.
I was hoping some of the high speed freaks would join me at the Silver State instead of taking out granny doing 55 on the freeway next to them.

If you really want to put you and the car to a test, The SSCS is really the only place you can do it safely, as safe as you can be at 150 plus.

It's the only time in my life I've had a high performance car with my foot to the floor for over 2 minutes! Think about it. What's the longest you've held your foot to the floor without shifting or lifting? When I ask people the most common answer is about 15-20 seconds. Now think of 2 minutes in 6th gear flat out, with out worrying about another car or the cops! Sounds better all the time.
As I said the event is populated with Corvettes, please we need more Mustangs! Check it out, every May and September!!!

The car is 100% stock and you are doing runs like that? That’s not good for a stock motor from all I’ve seen.

The motor wasn't stock and great, for 23K miles. The car was built in 02 by Sean Hyland Motorsport in Canada. It's been a track car and occasional street car for about 18k miles, so after all of the "use" the car got, I'm pretty happy it lasted as long as it did. It had a Paxton Novi 1000 on it and made 405 at the crank. He built 15 that year and mine is lucky #13. The new motor is an 01 Cobra DOHC with a Novi 2000. It's set up for 500 HP and built to last another 17 years and another 23K miles, I'm hoping!!!

But let me tell you about my back up car for the Silver State!

It's a stock 2015 Mustang EcoBoost Coupe with the Performance Package. It's been my back up car twice now and both times averaged 125MPH for 90 miles. Top speed two years ago was 145, this year 152! Not bad for a grocery getter with 80k miles. It hasn't been to the repair shop yet and doesn't burn a drop of oil between changes.

But it's NOT the SHM, it won't do 160 plus and I can't hear the damn motor!!

2 mins in 6th gear sounds like a grenade waiting to go off inside the engine. seems like along time, most half mile cars are finished in under 20 secs and thats long time to be wot. id think the aero would catch you in under a min, probably 45 secs or so

We were doing 125 in 6th and floored it trying to get to our tech speed of 165. It made it but real slowly. My navigator suggested after the race I should have down shifted to 5th. I smiled and asked him the last time he contemplated downshifting at 125! We both got a good laugh out of that one. It probably would have gotten to top end sooner if I'd have run it out in 5th, but I had the time and the room to do it slowly in 6th.
