A beautiful day and the springs break on the 12x12 door and I couldn’t get the Mustang out.

Happened to me the other day on the wife’s side, 10x9 door.

I did a 20 point turn lol inside the garage and got her Escape out for her, but she’s had to park outside the past few nights, springs are on backorder - since this is considered a commercial size door- with the company I use.

She’s been a good sport about it, glad I got her a remote start for Xmas !

Yep, that happened to us last year. Didn't know the springs broke, and it wound up burning up the garage door opener in the process (shouldn't have, but it did).

I pried the door up by hand and shoved 2x4s under the sides, then put c-clamps on the rails so the door couldn't crash back down. Cost $850 to replace everything. If it's just a spring, maybe $300-$400

This 12x12 is heavy AF. I was able to put the spring back together and went to town and got some 30” 1/2” rods to turn it with. It’s now able to open and the door guy is coming to look at a permanent fix. That thing with set screws had come out of the spring. So far it’s holding

Watch a damn you tube video on how to reset the spring tension. If you already bought the rods and have a crescent wrench, you are 90% of the way to fixing it yourself. Its not rocket science. I can do it so I know you can....

I had to redo mine last week its a smaller door but i had to go to a speciality garage door place to get the spring (thats irritating) paid 75$ for 1 spring used 2 long extensions as pull bars ( probably not my smartest move but it worked) took about 2 hours. side note it only had 1 spring not 2. found a chart on the web that had a turn list for spring size and weight (i think) so i knew how many turns to go. hope this helps

I just don’t know why it came apart when nothing was actually broke. That piece has nothing that holds it in the spring except the taper. I got it fixed where it opens like before. This door is over 40 years old. It could use new rollers that run in the tracks

Did you get it taken care of? Regretfully, I forgot to follow up. I wasn't kidding when I told you it was simple. If you were closer, I would have helped you fix it for a couple Diet Cokes and a good cheeseburger.

Yep, it’s fixed. The overhead door guys cams out later and replaced all the rollers for the tracks and tightened the springs a bit more.

My door guy said to lubricate the springs. I spray a line of Castrol Chain Lube across the top of the springs and it slowly seeps down between all the coils. I do it every 2-3 months but my overhead door gets used many times per day.
