Hello everyone,

I have a GoPro Hero 3 and to say the least, it's outdated. The battery sucks, quality isn't good, its so slow when using the app, etc. etc....

Anyways, I am going to purchase the hero 6 and so far I added the chest mount (for interior driving videos) and the suction mount (for exterior, obviously). I already have the head strap for my Hero 3.

Question is, when I used to use my hero 3, as many of you know, after 20 mph or so all you hear is wind noise. I'm sure the newer ones are better, but still.

So what is everyone's setups to take videos of the outside of the car and have good sound recording? External mic?

Please share any info you have. Thanks

Ive used an external mic for my videos. Got some cheapo mics on Amazon and have one routed from the Gopro to rear exhaust area. no wind noise.

Big thing with the GoPro's is the housing

If you buy a fully enclosed housing without the open back door, the sounds quality will improve, but, volume will lessen a bit.

Something like that should help with the sound quality getting static-like at higher speeds.

I just use hot glue to stick my phone to the side of the car. It took a few phones before I realized I should just do it to the case.

Figure out where you want to mount it then run an external mic to the trunk area or under the hood or wherever depending on what you want to hear

External mic is the way to go.

Battery life still isn’t great even on the newer ones.

Last few times out I stuck it next to the rearview behind the windshield with the open back. Windows down on track but it does cut most of the wind noise.

Run a dead cat on the back. It will knock out the wind noise. It's basically fur stitched on top of a piece of mic foam that's glued to the back of the case. I used the open case. It takes about 10 minutes to make. You can also buy them pre-made on Amazon.

Sorry for the shaky video....I was involved in an on track incident the previous heat that knocked the fairing the camera is mounted on loose. FWIW, starting grid was randomly generated...I did not qualify that far back. (Started 36th, finished 8th).

I use a chest mount when i ride my banshee. It absolutely sucks. I recommend a helmet mount instead where it goes on the helmet but on the right like this https://target.scene7.com/is/image/Target/14614355_Alt01?wid=1400

this is a chest mount
This is a chest mount worn backwards.
Yes i ride like a scary fairy princess but im using those boring videos as an example.
