An alarming number of students are flat out incapable of dealing with any kind of challenge or adversity. They fall apart like a wet tissue and want an immediate out. Many are also coddled by parents who are nothing more than enablers for this type of behavior. Many districts across the country, including mine, have given over the building keys to the kids and parents since administration is populated with cowards--the majority of which are failed teachers with no leadership skills.

Our son was having grades problems in freshman year, and we went to talk to his teachers about it. I was surprised and really disappointed for society when it dawned on me that many of his teachers assumed a defensive position, thinking we were coming in to blame them, when in fact, we were coming in to tell them, crack the ****in' whip and we have their backs. Apparently they just don't hear that anymore. What they hear is, Buffy and Shanecqua can do no wrong, and Billy the bully would never, so what's YOUR problem, and do I have to call the superintendent.

I see a correlation between declining coping skills and the increased use of today's social social media along with an extreme leftist culture (mainstream) that doesn't emphasize personal responsibility. The culture inspires victimhood, and allows people to think they can't fix anything themselves, and someone else will have to fix it for them. This culture is perpetuated in our school systems and affecting our young people.

Good input! I would add the lack of experiencing real consequences for their actions. Kids don't even get spanked nowadays. How many times were the cops involved with that latest shooter in Fla.? That kid should have been shipped off and worked straight somewhere! Is there even such a place as reform school? I remember that constant threat looming over my head as a little trouble maker. Real consequences taught me, I just don't see it exercised today.

I’m a big fan of capital punishment. It’s too late for this kid, but his swift prosecution and execution serve as a deterrent to others.

If hate the American style of justice where you go in front of a jury and are innocent until proven guilty then You should move to Saudi Arabia, the land of swift punishment and routine Executions.

I hate to say it, but this kid isn't innocent. He was caught red handed.

He will be afforded his due process, but that is not going to change the outcome.

So the kid’s confession shouldn’t somehow speed up the process? I’m against the bullshit circus which you know is coming and that taxpayers have to again foot the bill for a high profile crime. Did you somehow overlook the word “prosecution” in my post?

it's never been more evident that we have a mental health issue in our country.

Clearly the media is ignoring it because the ones who seemingly suffer from it the most are young straight white males (so much for privilege. eh?), and it won't work with their anti-gun narrative.

Fixing mental health is a great idea that will take about two decades to get results.

A law could be passed, funding allotted and by the start of next school year, trained and armed professionals could be protecting our children. Just my opinion

I think armed school resource officer would a great job for some of our veterans. Probably make the dipshit thinking about stealing his dads rifle think just a bit harder.

Would need to Google because I can't recall off the top of my head, but within the last few weeks a shooting was stopped thanks to an armed guard.

Yes sir, in my home state. The town is Dixon, IL. With a 9 year old boy growing bigger everyday, that one hit too close to home.

I dont have the answers but goddamn am I sick of seeing this story every few weeks.

Focus on the problem of schools being more social justice indoctrination centers than actual schools for starters.

Oh and they want to put an age restriction on something? How about social media.

That does make sense. What 9 year old needs a twitter and fb? Don't see a reason for kids having the world crammed down their throats 24/7 before they even know long division.

Kids can be vicious. Why allow them to use a tool that takes their viciousness to unprecedented levels.
Inclined to agree with this. Used to be if you were bullied it was 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. Now it's 24/7. Kids (and adults) are little shits, piling on that young isn't helping them.

They are also smart and beyond creative. Ban social media for kids 18 and under and they WILL find a way around it.

This is an interesting read on an experimental with Ethiopian children and Android tablets

Given Tablets but No Teachers, Ethiopian Children Teach Themselves

Earlier this year, OLPC workers dropped off closed boxes containing the tablets, taped shut, with no instruction. “I thought the kids would play with the boxes. Within four minutes, one kid not only opened the box, found the on-off switch … powered it up. Within five days, they were using 47 apps per child, per day. Within two weeks, they were singing ABC songs in the village, and within five months, they had hacked Android,” Negroponte said. “Some idiot in our organization or in the Media Lab had disabled the camera, and they figured out the camera, and had hacked Android.”
