They can be so damn frustrating to hunt, it's like duck hunt on level 99, blaster against the screen and you still miss. Then that dog starts laughing.
I could tell a few hundred stories but the one that always gets me.
We are finishing up for the day and everyone is loading up their trucks, and ejecting their shells. It had been about 2-3 hours since we last flushed any birds and my grandpa got a pheasant, dropped him hard and tossed him in the back of his vest.
So my grandpa starts clearing his shotgun and no sooner than the 3rd shell popped out that pheasant woke up and flew out of the vest pocket heading strait for the nearest hedgerow taunting us the whole way. Started ringing all their necks after that one, no matter how "dead" they were.
I was young and still rocking a 20 gauge, so while I could easily get quail, pheasant seemed bulletproof, only time I'd have a chance to drop them was with 4 shot within 10 yards.
