Well, the adventure has already started, so I guess I might as well start a thread on my second save. I'm going to post this really quick, and save the next few response spots so it stays organized. Ill start building it today, while loading up pics and what not.
Cheers!
It's almost hard to find a place to start. It was such a whirl wind of craziness that lead up to buying, then going to get the car. The car was sold Thursday afternoon, and after 5 hours of deliberation, the original buyer backed out of the sale over a few hundred dollars. That meant that I owned the car, and didn't have much time to get things sorted, and go get it.
With 2 days to get ready to leave, I pressed nearly everyone I knew about being a co-pilot. Unfortunately with such short notice, I couldn't dig anyone up. 3000 miles in 3 days was going to suck alone, but it was my only choice at that point. I packed a few pillows, a blanket, a change of clothes, and headed out the door Saturday night.
This is Saturday night, at 10:30. Topped her off with some 93, just for good luck, and headed south.
I made it from central maine to the south side of CT, heading into NY, before I hit the snow/ice storm I was trying to avoid. Even at 3am, there was a ton of traffic, and everyone was driving like an idiot. Before I got hit by someone, I decided to pull off the highway for a few hours. I found a Target parking lot and slept there for a few hours.
Took some pics through PA on my way to visit my cousin in Waynesboro. Had nice traveling and some nice area to cover. And it was nice to see ground that was trying to look green, instead of snow everywhere!
And boy was there some caffeine consumed on this trip. I think my kidneys are still plotting against me after this trip. The ole Limited 6.2 was drinking fuel, and I was slamming monster.
MMMMMM FUEL!!!! Lots of this consumed! 274 gallons total.
As much night driving was done as I could handle too. A lot easier to maneuver the highways with a trailer when its empty.
Monday:
Early morning Monday I managed to drive within 3 hours of the Copart yard before my eyes gave out on me. Found this lovely, not freaky at all, old gas station to park in. I rolled my shirts up in the truck windows here, as I didn't really want to wake up to some homeless guy staring at me. Luckily I was left alone for the 4 hours I was there.
Around 9:30 Monday morning, I was in the Copart yard. Exhausted, but pretty amped to see the car finally. Nervous that it might be worse than the few pics I had of it may had lead me to believe.
Before too long she came out on the forks of a bucket loader, and was placed on my trailer, so I could get her strapped down and ready for the long ride home.
The inside was basically perfect, besides some cleaning that would be needed. There is a little smell in the interior, but its pretty faint. The cluster will need to be pulled and inspected too, as there is some discoloring in the outer lenses. I'm hoping its just smoke damage, and not a burnt cluster from voltage back feed or something.
Corsa exhaust of some kind.
The underside looks like it should. No rust or anything hiding anywhere, as it is a southern bell.
And the engine bay. It looks awful, but after some digging when I was loading it, and more once I got back, its very very light damage. Here are the bay pics I took while loading the car.
Passenger side engine harness. As you can see, its just the tape a loom that got burned up. The wires underneath are still coated, and look fine. I'm replacing everything anyways, but its nice to see that it didn't get that hot over all.
Aftermarket idler.
And this is the corner where all the action happened. The radiator support is tore up from the fire department attempting to get under the hood. But the wires show a pretty clear story. All the lower wires are bare, with all the coating burnt off them. But chase the wires a little ways across the nose, and you can see that a lot of it is still intact. This makes me pretty certain that the issue wasn't from the car itself, but from something sitting in front of the car. I also believe that this means the car overall didn't get very hot either. Something for fuel or flammable liquid was burning around the car, and caught the car on fire.
The passenger side didn't get very warm at all. Washer jug is intact still, and even the headlight appears to be untouched.
Strapped down and ready for the long trip home! At this point I'm pretty happy with the car and the purchase. Everything for damage looks light, and I'm much less concerned about the health of the engine itself too. Even the pulleys were spinning freely, and the blower turns really easily too. Again, I think a light quick fire is all we are looking at.
Cheers!
