I have a pistol until i can(if i can) get to my rifle. Both have whatever ammo is in them. Nothing special. I also dont believe in shotguns for home defense due to low capacity, hard to use, and my lack of training with them.

you are going to get conflicting preferences because it complete depends on gun, shell size, house layout, where you will be shooting it and so on. Will you be most likely shooting down a hallway, in an open room, what is on the other side, kids rooms, other peoples room? Shooting to kill or shooting to slow down?

I use Winchester PDX1 defender rounds in my 12 gauge Bruno.

I currently have Hornady Critical Defense 00 2-3/4" Buckshot for home, and Federal #7.5 00 for a target load. This is for my 930 SPX 12 Gauge.

I’m always going to shoot to kill.
I know exactly what you are saying but who can say for sure where an intruder will enter a house?

They always say, you are responsible for every bullet that you fire. If it goes through the wall and hits someone outside, you're responsible for it, even if you're defending your home or yourself.

You want stopping power, not penetration. Slugs will go through a person and usually go through drywall without an issue and could cause damage outside. Just something to think about.

Home defense - Buckshot > Slugs

Hornady makes a great product and stands behind it, but, it is expensive.

Right you will not know for sure but you can make a good guess. Chances are break-ins with you home will come at night, most likely in bed. Most people I know keep their home defense gun in their bed room. So chances are you will be confronting an intruder around your master bed room. So coming out your bedroom are you looking down a hallway, looking into another bedroom, looking down a staircase.

As Grabber I would want stopping not penetrating. Buck Shot or large bird shot over Slugs.

I agree with @GodStang

The Shotgun was the defense gun. Now, my wife and I each have a handgun on our nightstands with a magazine loaded with Ranger T-series jacketed hollow points ready to go. The shotgun is locked away now, but, will be there for when the zombie apocalypse comes.

Pretty soon, I'll have another small addition that will stay at my bedside when I'm not CC the firearm. Considering my wife and I are pretty good shots (30/30 for CCW qualification all inside the 9 ring at over 30ft with a .45) I am confident we will be able to stop whomever comes in.

I also hear the best thing to do for a shotgun is fire all of those defense rounds to get a feel for how they kick and what type of spread pattern and damage they can do. Then decide on the best one.
