Your scenario just shows the parent should have gotten up earlier. He is not "screwed", he still has a choice of wether he buys or not.
I agree, its how I got an x360 and sold for profit.
I'm thinking of selling the nintendo switch for a profit. Can make $75 bucks.

Capitalism is great. I don't get mad at people for making money. But there is such a thing as gross abuse of capitalism. Capitalism in this form inherently raises the cost of a normal retail item. Most things are priced accordingly for their demographic, purpose, and design. Paying 200 bucks for a piece of plastic because it's Ford OEM and not produced any longer is absurd.

In my case stated on the first page, their's a special place in hell for people who make it excessively expensive to buy their kids a toy, a hard to find item for restoring/repairing your car/widget/thing, or simply abusing the crap out of a sale.

It's the simple concept of "sharing" that seems to be lost in this thread. It's one thing to make a buck, but abusing the concept is absurd to me.

What's absurd is to think that supply and demand shouldn't dictate an item's price.

If supply and demand were applicable in this case, there would be no supply for the part in the first place. The dealers would've been sold out long before someone bought it all out.

They simply see it as a part that will sell eventually, today, tomorrow, ten years from now, or never. They figure they can find a desperate soul to take advantage of and make 400% on. When in reality said soul is just wanting to restore their old car.

It is quite applicable in this case.

This has been huge in the Viper world since the mid 2000's during the first round of "Viper ending production".

A couple vendors bought up all of the new old parts from Dodge dealers, and third party companies that wouldn't have a need for them anymore. They gave pennies on the dollar when the supply was quite a bit higher than the demand.

Now, the demand is high because those 15-25 year old cars have failing parts. The vendors that bought up the old stock have their hard cost, plus the cost to store it all, etc.. I have no problem with them making money doing so. If they hadn't of purchased all the old stock, who knows what you would do if you had a 1996 Viper GTS and your window regulator blew shit on you?

So is it acceptable for a wealthy individual to buy up the rights to a medication that is needed by thousands, then turn around and triple the price?

If the person is doing it as a consumer, more power to them. If there intent is to resell the products, such as a blower, it is possible that as the person is not a legal re-seller of the manufacturer, the warranty is void and the person who sold the stock to the person is in violation of their contract, the person is in legal jeopardy and the final purchaser will not be whole.

Triple the price would be nice.

The current 1000% markup is a little on the ridiculous side.

A readily available supercharger that has many similar/equal "replacements" whereas a medication generally does not have generics for the immediate release. That's comparing apples to viagara.

The problem is not the guy buying. The problem is the fact that anyone could "buy up the rights to a medication".

Things went from the butt hurt economics of completely optional free market car parts in a reseller capacity to a "how do you feel" scenario that's framed with "but it's for the kids at Christmas time, that's not fair" to a moral discussion about "but what if this was for a drug and people will die"... In under 2 pages...

I bet the cure for cancer was purchased for a billion dollars by the companies that own the rights to the different cancer treatments. Chew on that.

I just threw that out there to see how far a person could take Capitalism before others start crying foul.

The irony would be the guy price gouging everyone and not being able to get the drug to cure his cancer.
