how the hell can I tell if this damn thing is really and truly unlocked just by pluging it in?? Anyone? What am I looking for in terms of what displayed on the screen and where (what menu)?

in the status screen, its should say stock. It will say aftermarket if its attached to a car.
Huh, Ill have to look at that again but if I recall it said something like "GFB00579" (not esxactly those characters) but I dont remember seeing anything that said "stock".
My buddy probably just got shafted by a guy who sold him a locked tuner...waiting for his response...
My Xcal 3 was locked when I bought it from another member here. I don't know about the X 2's but an X 3 will say locked and how many unlocks are remaining when you power it up.
