To think, Jeff, that you've been Terminatorless for almost 12 years. I remember it well. Do you miss it at times?

Hey OP, how many miles are on your car now?
If I was go your route, on a vert, I would do Ruby Red or Rapid Red. I think these two colors highlight what happens when you tweak a great color like Redfire and make it even better.

I do like grey, but not for my cars or car payment.

Hello 1Kona. My Vert has 77K miles on it now. It had 75K when I bought it in 2016. I have already repainted the hood because when I bought the car the hood looked like the car was driven behind a gravel truck.

If you've seen my 65 Mustang build thread you will notice I'm partial to red too LOL....

I had really bad orange peel on my 2004 Terminator. Clear was so thin that it burned through immediately when I had it wet sanded. So, in the end I had it stripped down and repainted with better quality paint. It looked amazing when finished, and I was able to sell it at 6 years old for what I originally paid for it off of the showroom floor.

Thank you Hissman! That's what I was wondering when I made this thread. Glad to know you sold a repainted Terminator no problem. I'm assuming you had your car repainted in its original color?

My paint isn't terrible, but could use some help. I think I could make it look great even if I repainted it Silver Metallic.

Yes, well it was very close to torch red, but a little more vibrant.

Well first off, drive that car more! I know the 65 is taking all your time but… they are too fun to let sit. My thoughts are if the paint is crap then re paint whatever color you want. There is a guy on here that has a wrapped burnt orange color that’s GORGEOUS! Also you could match the 65 in color or a darker ruby red that looks amazing too. In this market I don’t think a color change would hurt, especially with your quality of work and level of OCD. Having a different color may attract new buyers, but there will always be someone willing to buy if it’s the original color as well. You should think about it while doing a burnout in the cobra. Since you have year round driving season down there.

Lol, I don't mention it much around here Geoff, but I bought the vert to use as a doner car for my 65. Once I got the vert home and my wife drove it she said I wasn't touching that vert lol.

So, the vert got parked and the story of the 65 is history now lol.

And with all my cars and my limited space the vert is buried behind my Roush and Cobra coupe. So, it's a chore to get the vert out now. And as you mention, once I'm done working on the 65 for the day I have zero energy and desire to get the vert out lol....

From my perspective it needs to be done right one of 2 ways.

1. Stock color with full jambs or cut off in an unnoticeable area like a bend or seam.

2. Non stock color, full jambs 100% correct. This includes the engine bay and even covering the over spray that ends up on the crash bars front and rear. No corners cut. You don't want it to look like you cheaped out.

Along with #2 it needs to be a color that will age well. That green car you posted does not fit that bill IMOP.

Colors like destroyer grey do not work IMOP without dark wheels and black accents on the car. Chrome anything makes that color look dull.

Also at what point in your 65 build thread do you get into painting your own car? I ask because I am doing the same this year on my GT and am always interested in picking up tips from home gamers like myself.

Hello Blkkbgt! I agree with you 100% on both counts. I made this thread and asked the question because my idea was to disassemble the car to paint it a different color. I believe the "ONLY" way to do a color change correctly is to disassemble the car.

So, I did not want to go through all that work, time, labor and effort if most people will not want to buy a re-painted Terminator or for people to tell me they would buy it, but wouldn't be willing to pay top dollar for it because it's not the original color. I do not plan on taking this car completely apart only to make the same amount of money a person would pay for a stock silver metallic vert. Might as well sell it as such.

I posted those colors as examples of re-painted Terminators and to show I couldn't find the same type of color change for a vert. I did not mean to imply I wanted to paint my vert either of those colors.

If I did end up re-painting the car it would be CO, SB (I thought about MC, but I wouldn't be able to make the interior match) or a non factory color that would stand the test of time (i.e. 93 Cobra Teal, Bullitt Green, Bimini Blue, some form of Red or something else along those lines).

In my build thread, most of it is about painting. I changed the front end and then painted the engine bay and posted my steps. Then I installed the drive train and started to paint my fenders and front bumper. But I think when I started painting the body will help you the most. If you look on the web page (i.e. on your PC) that process starts on page 57. If you're using the phone app the process starts with post #1,138.

If you do take a look please let me know what you think. There was a lot of learning, but hopefully my mistakes will keep you from making the same ones.

Thank you for your feedback on re-painting my vert. Greatly appreciated!

Yeah, I had a 2002 Infinity QX4 (used) after I sold my Cobra. I loved that SUV, except for the 3-speed auto + overdrive. I loved my '14 Mini Cooper S (it was just a lot of fun with a tune, and it was new), my 2019 Genesis G70 (fund and it was new), and now my 2022 Genesis GV70 (which is loaded with fun and useful features). The GV70 is my by far favorite and it's new! LOL.

Hello everyone,

I have a 2003 SVT Cobra convertible that is silver metallic. I probably will not keep it forever and I will not pass it down to a family member. So, that means I will most likely sell it at some point in the future.

From being around this community for many years I know that most folks do not prefer convertibles and they do not prefer the color silver. So, I have a double whammy going against me in the sellers market.

Those of you who have been keeping up with my 65 Mustang build thread know I'm getting pretty good at painting. I really do not use my vert and would have no problems if it were undriveable for a while.

Therefore, I was thinking of making that car my next project. I wouldn't change it mechanically or anything. I would just take it apart and re-paint it a different color. I would do everything (i.e. engine bay, door jams, trunk jam, etc.).

So, these are some questions I would like your guys opinion on:

1. Even though it's silver should I keep it the same color for originality purposes (if I kept it the same color I wouldn't bother re-painting it as the paint is decent)?

2. Would you purchase a re-painted (different color) Terminator?

3. Do you think the value would go up, down or remain the same for a re-painted Terminator (We all know the color does play a factor in the sale of a Terminator)?

4. If you think a color change is a good thing, what color would you paint it (i.e. factory color (MC, CO, SB) or a custom color. I've seen Grabber Green and Destroyer Grey)?

I do not plan on doing this any time soon, but have been thinking about it and weighing my options on this topic.

Appreciate any feedback or insight you guys have on this issue.

I couldn't find any Verts painted a different color. Hence this thread and my idea.

Custom Color
i'd consider a car that was repainted it's original color or a custom color.
I would not consider a car that was repainted an "other than it's original'' Cobra color.
A Redfire cobra repainted Sonic Blue would be a no go for me.
Still I think original paint, even with blemishes, is more valuable.

That's what I was wondering. How many people think a Terminator color change is a no go.

Yeah, in your example I don't think I would go for that color change either, but there are some Terminator colors people really just don't want.

I think yellow is at the bottom and silver is just above that when it comes to desirability.

Some people like the Mineral grey, but I've never liked it. Too much of a brownish tint for my liking, but others love it. Now DSG is where it's at for me. Love that color on a Terminator.

I like both greys, personally.
You're right though, I don't know why silver isn't popular but i think silver metallic was a mistake on Ford's part. It's too "white"- no depth.
Satin Silver was so much nicer..that might be an idea, but would it make it more salable? That's a huge gamble.
I bought my SB vert in 2019 and didn't even know it was a popular color as I really wasn't following Terminators at that point- I just knew I wanted one.
I was looking for a certain type of car within a certain budget and that popped up.
It has 90k though, but I paid $13,800. It has some issues but all maintenance stuff and it's only pullied, CAI and tuned- stock exhaust.
Adult owned and garaged. That was important. The underside is immaculate for it's miles.
I guess the question is, even though I understand you're capable of doing the work, what's a nice paint job worth and can you get that amount of value back from it?
I'm glad I'm not making the decision, lol.
Best of luck tho....

And that right there is exactly why I made this thread. Because there is no way I'm doing all that work for nothing LOL.

I would rather take a small loss because the original color isn't desirable rather than taking a major loss because no one wants to pay for a color change Terminator after all that time and money is invested.

So you are expecting someone to pay more for a repaint.

In that case it better not be an OEM color and you'll just have to find the right person.

But even then, I don't think anyone will pay what it "cost".

No sir. Expecting is the wrong word. I would like to be in the price range of the color.

All things being equal (body type, condition, mileage, etc.) do you think someone will pay the same amount for a SB as they would silver? I don't think so. Why? Because SB is a more desirable color than silver.

So, for example, if I re-paint my 03 vert, let's say CO, do you think I could go from silver money to CO money in the sale price?

Let's say if I made it look like this:
CO Cobra engine Bay 02.jpg

And if people, in general, say no then I won't consider doing a re-paint.

As mentioned, I wouldn't do this just for fun. Taking a Terminator apart, sanding the old paint, fixing the minor imperfections, painting the entire car, polishing it and then reassembling it is no easy task. However, someone would be getting an extremely nice looking Terminator.

And if you think someone will not pay what it "cost" to do this, those are the comments I'm looking for. Trying to get a consensus here.

We are at 3 pages of responses and it would appear most say they "would" buy a re-paint, but it would depend on color and price. To me that means most would try to use the re-paint as a point of contention to get the price down.

So, if I had to make the decision today I probably wouldn't re-paint the car a different color and just sell it as is.

Appreciate the feedback Corbic (y).
