With several states legalizing Marijuana and with more to surely follow, there has to be some investment opportunities out there. Whether it be backing a growing operation or store, or simply buying stock. What are everyone's thoughts on this subject? I read an article earlier this week that the state of Washington collected an absurd amount of taxes the first week of legalization.

I could some, including members of my extended family, having an objection. But if it was legal in all 50 States tomorrow, what's the difference from starting a brewery?

Discuss.

I haven't invested in any, but a little while ago the SEC shut down all pot stocks for a week or so. Not sure what came of that. I have a buddy that planned to drive an armored car around to the pot shops, collect money, and take it to the bank, but the feds got in the way because marijuana is still illegal according to the federal government. I have no idea how the shops are dealing with that.

Before investing anything I would definitely study up on the laws and the financials of whatever company you are looking at. Most of the companies are cheap at the moment and now would be the time to get in, imagine getting these stocks for pennies and they turn into Altria or Philip Morris if they ever eventually become legal.

There was a pretty good episode on Vice about this if you have HBO. Essentially they do exactly what your friend wanted to do, minus the depositing in the banks. One company drives around in vans loaded with ex-military and ex-cops to the dispensaries and pics up the cash and takes it to a safe location. I'm not sure where they drop it off, but I'm guessing they have to launder it some how. I'm really wondering how these places will file federal taxes.

It was pretty funny seeing the ex-cops doing almost exactly what drug dealers do.

Nobody on this forum is more qualified than me to tell you that the words "investment" and "marijuana stocks" do not belong together....

If you had money set aside to put into Casino slot machines, you mite try this. Understand though, you would, most likely, be better off with your original purpose of putting the money into the slot machines.

For the most part it's a mom 'n pop industry at this point, with a lot of potential risk (still a federal crime). As soon as it's legal nation wide that's when the major players will start getting involved.

Bingo!

I would never put money into an industry that is Federally illegal. You are just asking for trouble.

I bought 3,000 shares of PHOT at $0.05 and it exploded up to around $0.52 before they halted trading on it. When they re-opened it tanked down to $0.08 so I'm just sitting on it hoping they will get traction again. I think you'll have to pick the right one to make money.

Should you invest? Yes!

Have I personally? No. Why? Because I don't know the first thing about playing with stocks.

Already have. I live very close to Oregon and plan to get involved there, too, when they legalize. My WA investment is on the grow side while the OR one will be retail (We already have storefront located next to the restaurant/bar w/ gambling my partner and I also bought). OR will be the better option as they've already pretty much said they'll tax it at about 1/3 of what WA is doing (much like their liquor taxation). I'm expecting WA customers to be willing to drive 5 miles to to our place to save a ton. I'm hoping OR will be more liberal in terms of where they allow usage.
