There are two way to go:

What fits?
Or what will work best on a 17 X 9?

A 255 or 275 is best but only the tire Manufacturer/Supplier can tell you if their tire will fit. My rule of thumb is that I usually go by tread width. No more then a 1/2 inch wider tread width then rim width.

I'm getting ready to buy some new tires and i have real Ford 95 Chrome Cobra R's in 17x9 also, my last set was just 245-45 17's. I want to get that wide look in the back, so i need to find out what's the widest i can get to. I might have to get some spacers to get the wide look in the rear i'm looking for,but i'd like to have a little wider tire also.

Tire brands do fluctuate a little by size, but from my experience the widest tire would be 275/40R-17. Anything larger than this will cause abnormal tire wear.

Let me know if you have any questions.

I put 275/40/17 MT D/Rs on my 17x9s and they fit perfectly without any bulge.

The MFG makes a HUGE difference.. The Goodyear GSd3s bearly fit a 315 on a 17x10.5... but I am running Nitto 315s on the stock 17x9 and its a perfect fit..

if you put the 2 tires next to each other there is a signifigant difference in width.

I have 285/40/17s on my stock rims and they fit perfect. You can run 315/35/17 Nitto DRs no problem

can easily fit 315/35/17 nitto drags no problem at all. thats what everyone runs.

Hello Easy, but a couple quick questions:
1- what type Nitto's are your 315/35/17s (rears) and 275s (fronts)?
2- redundant question here, but your using Nitto's on 17x9 rims, as viewed in your sig. picture? If not, what size rims and tires are you using?
3- the 2004 Cobra pictured in your sig. has the look I am destined to have on my 99', as such, did you lower your car (what lowering kit, if applicable), and if so, what was used to lower it and by how much (3/4"-1.5")?

That 2004 has the look that I would like to have on mine. Very sexy and aggressive.
