Since Mercon II was discontinued long ago and Mercon III is now getting harder to find, what is the difference between the two.

This will be used to change not only the transmission fluid, but the power steering fluid in a friends new (old) 1994 Toyota Camry.

The car runs and shifts OK but it has never (or seldom) been maintained.

That car calls for a DexIII or equivalent ATF in both applications.

DexIII fluids are available all over the place, don't limit your search to a Mercon version of a DEX III fluid.

Or you could put the ultimate upgrade in there and use Royal Purple Max ATF (part #01320, quart bottle)

If buying off the shelf, you can't grab better than RP Max ATF. Depending on the condition of the car, it's what I would use buying local.
