what tire size with 20x9 wheel?

With only a 9" wide rim you shouldn't go with anything larger than a 275 section width tire. None of the sizes you mentioned will work..in fact I would check with the manafacturer of those tires and see what the minimum rim width is suggested for those sizes. I know for a fact a 285 tire minimum is 9.5" and the 295's (what's on my 997S with an 11" wide rim) the minimum is a 10" wide rim..that's minimum.

Really what's optimum for a 9" wide rim is a 255 section width. Just because you put a wider tire on a smaller width rim doesn't make the tire look wider as it is pinching the side walls.

I don't know anyone who makes a 285/40/20 rim unless it's a all season high performance.

What wheel are you using or planning on using. Why would you go more narrow than the OEM wheel??
