Follow your heart and your budget. Whatever you do, think it through and make a plan that covers the before, during and after, including potential hiccups (like unplanned fuel system upgrades or tune issues). Bear in mind, too, that there are a number of great tuners out there, and on SVTPerformance, who can provide a good, safe, remote tune. You don't necessarily have to have it done locally, although that would be preferred IF the tuner is top notch and experienced with these motors.

I just wanted to chime in here. Lost of good advice here so far. Op you don't strike me as someone that thinkers with your car often. Sounds like your a bit bored and looking to drop a few $$$ into the car to make it interesting again. My vote is to not over complicate things. Do a new whipple 2.3 or similar Kenne Bell, larger injectors, new fuel pumps and possibly a boost a pump depending on what pumps you get. Run 93 octane and enjoy your 600 whp. E85 is a fantastic upgrade but sounds like it may be a bit more involved that what you currently want to do.
If he decides to upgrade his blower AND keep it as simple as possible, I like your recommendations!

yeah that makes sense, just don't know what that would be. She is lowered, shifter, new rims and tires last year, exhaust etc. Some say to just find a good deal on a 2.3 whipple, factory fuel system no problem, get me into that upper 500 RWHP world, don't have to do much. Some say don't waste your money, you will barely notice the difference. The other big issue is tuners. I used HPP in 2004 I believe, car has been running like a top for almost 20 years, never an issue, don't want some knucklehead tuning it but i imagine a lot of things have advanced in 20 years. If I'm going to haul the car way down there, kind of dumb for a mild upgrade.

My buddy had a gen 2 Whipple 2.3 and made 590rwhp on 91 octane. He had GT pumps in a Fore hat with the upgraded FPDM and wire upgrade. You're not going to get much simpler than that.

As for the people that say you won't notice a difference they have no idea what they're talking about. 90hp is very noticeable. Along with the added torque.

There are some many tuners now finding a good one isn't a problem. There are a couple on here that everyone that's used them has been more than happy with.

600 on a 2.3 blower pump gas will become very boring, very quickly. On paper, on a dynosheet…it sounds fantastic. In real world, it loses 60 hp and tq within 20 minutes of driving it and getting heat soaked after a blast. Why? Because the tune will rob you of timing as soon as IAT2 hits 100 (which will happen FAST). By 150 IAT2, it’s game over, several degrees are gone until you pull over and let her cool. This will not happen on E85. Forget 100 IAT2 timing reductions….you won’t lose any timing even at 150. Way more repeatability as the heat comes on. Real world driving performance is much closer to your paper dynosheet.

As long as you understand this going in, and only piecing together the fuel system for bare minimum pump gas use….you’ll be ok. If the idea of losing so much power is not something you want to accept, then piece together a fuel system for E85 use right from the get go or you’ll be doing the fuel system TWICE $$$$

So would there be any advantage of going with a 2.9 right away and just run lower boost so if I ever decide I need more, then will just have to do the fuel system and tune?

That’s what I would do.

Find a Gen3 or 4 2.9 or Gen5 which is 3.0.

With a 2.9 Gen 2 I made 590/540.

15psi
91 octane.

Stock pumps with a BAP.

Again so as not to do things twice, I’d get ID 1050x injectors.

I’m my at 20psi on E85 and on the same injectors.

So if I went the 2.9 or 3.0 route? Not sure which one would be better, what pulley would I order it with to start off safe on 93 pump gas? U said new in the tank pumps right away, injectors? Injectors right away? I’m assuming with those two blowers would need a new throttle body and Maf? Would a guy still need a boost a pump then?

The 3.0 is crusher only. I’d actually go for a Gen3 or 4 standard inlet.

Whether new or used, they usually have a kit with the throttle body.

You’ll def need injectors no matter what.

On 93 you can usually run up to 17 or 18psi. Honestly not sure which pulley you’d need as elevation is a factor too. I wouldn’t worry about that just yet.

Affirm in the maf or you’ll need a maf extender; I believe Mafia is the only one. Still have one on my car.

I’d decide which tuner you want to use and talk to them to be honest.

They can tell you which injectors they like and point you in the right direction.

I went from stock pumps to E85/return so I can’t comment on pumps but I always see some GT supercar name thrown around.

I appreciate the input, going to start putting together a package, find a tuner either on here or try to find one closer maybe and see if they like the package, then pull the trigger and get it all done this winter, hopefully she is a smooth machine hitting the streets in the spring

Also when you say crusher only? You mean in intake where the throttle body will hold to? I’m assuming accufab is what most folks go with? I see some 2.9 kits come with that throttle body and cai like you said, are those better ?

FWIW, I had fun on my pump gas tune. I was mostly pump gas a couple weeks ago due to a long drive and no E85 around and it was still a thrill. I will say there was a noticeable difference between that and my full E85 tune. But hell, even a conservative tune with a bigger blower will still surprise 80% of the people on the streets looking for an easy kill. I keep hoping to run into an Evo I raced a few months ago. We were door to door the whole time. I want a rematch with my E85 tune.

The crusher and standard inlet refer to the plenum between throttlebody. When I spoke with Whipple they said if I never plan on going above 23psi the standard inlet is fine. Above that I'd want the crusher. So I went with the standard inlet. The crusher has some install headaches that I didn't want to deal with. Someone on here documented it pretty well in a thread.

So now you've gotten pretty much all the advice you need. Next step is you deciding what's best for your goals and budget, connect with a tuner, order what you need, and get it done. You have a full winter project ahead.

Yep, I appreciate the help, now to piece together or find a perfect fuel system that isn't crazy but with do both E85 and gas and find a tuner around my neck of the woods. I do appreciate all the advice.

I went with a VMP 2.65 Gen3R max effort kit. That along with a Lethal return fuel system, long tubes, off road x pipe, catback, ID1300X injectors, and all of the other supporting mods possible. The car made 670rwhp on 93 octane at 20lbs of boost in 98 degree heat with 92% humidity. I'm a fan of doing it right the first time and then enjoying it.

I will also say it sucked spending all of that money but when I picked her up and the build was super solid and sorted out it felt amazing. No corners were cut and I replaced other items that were more of a while I am in the kind of parts. If you cut corners and cheap out you will get less than desirable results.

01yeller covered why I wouldn’t recommend a crusher for you.

Those are really max effort and on E, you can go deep into the 700rwhp on a Gen3+ standard inlet.

It’s also significantly cheaper and easier to work around the standard inlets blowers.

so would a VMP be a smarter choice or stick with the whipple, guess I mights as well do a fuel sytem right away. Questions for the guys that did the fuel system, did you do a return style right away? Does your fuel system "whine" kind of like the old external aeromotive pumps? you said lethal has a good kit?

you can't go wrong with either choice, both blower are great blowers.

as far as fuel system, we really recommend the fore setups.

fore is a fuel system company, they actually make fuel systems, they don't piece together parts to make the most profit, and with our forum discounts, its hard to beat getting the best stuff

E85 uses 1/3 more fuel to the same volume of air on 93 octane. My fuel system represents close to the max for a non-return system. I am at 65% duty cycle at 22# of boost on 93 octane. The same system would be maxed out or very close to being maxed out on E85. This means you need to upgrade the fuel system to handle the extra volume of fuel required by E85. You can’t really opt to upgrade the system later if you plan to use E85.

There is a good deal on a brand new VMP 2.65 in here somewhere. I’m biased towards Whipple personally and would go Gen4 standard if it were me.

Think it’s in Terminator parts for sale.

Definitely go with Fore and get PTFE hose. It’s Teflon lined so you don’t get any fuel fumes.

Not sure if you’re doing the install, but you have to cut the hose for your fit. Some people get Leary about installing the fittings but you can always mark the hose and take it to a hydraulic shop and they’ll cut and install the fittings.

No noise from my pumps; just like stock and I think I’m good to about 1200hp or so.

This is definitely a do it once type upgrade.
