What is this and why is it there?

I noticed these behind the rear tires just inside the fender. There is one on each side. It looks like it is just a weight or something... :shrug:

Do they need to stay there? They seem to be "extra baggage" and I was considering removing them. What are they for? Does anyone know?

...I know, my car is dirty, it needs a good hand job. :rollseyes

If I did take them off, I could use a set of wheel chocks. :lol: These look like they would work and I wouldn't have to use the old blocks of wood anymore.

Has anyone else removed theirs?
