We Bought All the Motorcraft FL-1A Oil Filter Variants We Could Find | Take a Look

Evolution is a well understood and accepted scientific theory that often goes beyond the nature of biological organisms. In this case, the venerable Motorcraft FL-1A has adapted to changing engineering requirements for over half a century. The FL-1A became the gold standard for Ford V8 engines sometime in the late-60s. It replaced cartridge style filters like the Motorcraft FL-20. I searched for a more detailed history of these filters, but didn’t find anything definitive. I believe the FL-1 (the “A” would come later) was originally fitted to the 221 Windsor V8 when it was introduced in 1961, and it was originally marketed as an Autolite part instead of Motorcraft. There was even an FL-1HP Racing Oil Filter available at some point.

Still we can assume that most of the various filters I was able to collect were designed to deal with a range of fitment issues. The FL-300 is esstially a shorter version of the FL-1A, while the Motorcraft FL-400S is skinnier and the Motorcraft FL-910S is skinner and shorter still. The outlier is the Motorcraft FL-299 which threw space constraints out the window and went for max filtering capacity for industrial applications. Check out this vid for a closer look:

Ultimately, I like using standard Wix Filters for these applications. I feel they are a little better constructed than their Motorcraft counterparts, especially when you start considering cost. If anyone is interested, I have the part numbers and links where all these filters can be purchased below:

Great write up and good information Sid. Thank you!

Although a lot of folks like Wix, I always use Motorcraft filters. My Foxbody and 65 take the FL-1A. I think my 03's take the FL-820. I've always been happy with the Motorcraft filters. So, no reason to change to Wix or any other brand.....

Good info there, didn't realize they all had the same gasket surface.

FYI, the FL910 will fit on a 96 Geo Metro 1.0 3 cylinder, as well as a 27hp Briggs on my Ferris.

Question, when it comes to Amazon, is there no concern about cheap, imposter type manufacturers out there making inferior knockoffs?

Great info and images - thanks for sharing!

I don’t know if it still holds true today, but the Motorcraft branded oil filter was contracted to and manufactured by Purolator for Ford.

Can you do a side by side of the WIX vs Motorcraft? I’ve never seen a side by side and often hear the comments about WIX being “better” but would like to know more for educational purposes.

I believe I have a few laying around that I can cut open. I’ll check this weekend.

Great info! I run the FL-1A on the Bullitt with the oil relocation kit. Allows me to hold extra capacity between the filter and lines

I see one filter you missed. FL1HP

Been using these for probably 40+ yrs

One on current project.

That one doesn't appear to be current production, so I couldn't really get one. Do you have a spare used one laying around you could send me? I'm going to film a follow-up soon, and I'd really like to include it. There's also this one, but I was really going more for variations on the FL-1A design in terms of size/fitment rather than performance.

If you shake your Motorcraft filter and hear a “tinging, metal type sound”, it may have 2 Spring Plates instead of 1.
This is an 820, but could certainly happen to any with this design.
