Unfortunately the wife and I have been forced to buy her a newer car.

Yes I know rates aren't the best right not but used car prices are coming down and I need to get something done soon.

Despite my best efforts in the past I've been rather unsuccessful in being able to haggle for a significant lower price.

I've given dealers my contact info and walked away only to be spammed. I've had people try and divide my wide and I. I've been told the price is the price and there's no budging.

With that said what are some of the things you guys do to get the dealer to come down in price?

Thanks.

Yes maybe look at cars within your budget.

For example if you have 20k, look for a 14k car and it will leave extra money for taxes and miscellaneous items offered in the dealer finance office.

An example of what not to do would be to look at 20k cars and offer the dealer 14k.
Hopefully this helps.

I'm willing to drive for the right priced vehicle. And I am talking up to 300 miles one way. Idk where you are located, your avatar doesn't say, could it just be your region?

Also, I buy private w/e possible.

Dealerships are businesses with significant overhead costs. They have X amount of money into the purchase of a used car, and Y amount of money into reconditioning it. They need to sell it at a price to cover those costs, cover the opportunity cost of having X dollars of their floor plan tied up for however long it’s been on the lot, and turn some profit so they can afford to keep the lights on and kick some commission down to the salesman that sells you the car. Long story short, there won’t be much haggling to be had at any respectable dealer - the price is what it is. You may have better luck buying privately and finding someone that needs quick money more than they need the best money for their car.

We are staying well within our budget, I refuse to be vehicle poor.

I am simply trying to get the best price I can for whatever she decides on.

This is probably coming more from me being pist we have to do something now instead of next year like we planned.

It could very well be our area. It's kind of wonky because a few dealers are still charging 5-10K ADM on new vehicles but if you drive another 30 minutes you find the same brand dealer charging MSRP.

How and why the first dealer is able to charge ADM is beyond me.

For used I always just look at car gurus nationwide. Find the cheapest that I want and figure shipping. Then try to cut that deal if there is one local.

It's not a buyers market right now. Hasn't been for a while now. There's no secret ticket or anything. Dealerships/car lots know they can ask whatever they want and you'll pay it or the next guy will. I have a silver tongue but when we went to get rid of her Kia a month ago they fairly well told me to pound sand. I got them to give her a thousand more for her trade in and come off the asking price two thousand but that was it. And that took for ****ing ever. Almost six hours from the time we got on the lot until the papers were signed.

Just got my new car off autotrader.

As stated, days of negotiating heavily are over, unless buying brand new.

I looked at average sale price - anything vehicle needs (my car will need tires soon) = realistic price.

Got $1000 off posted price and fees waived

If you can swing it @Blkkbgt (hold out) I’d do an order out and be done with it. Not knowing specifics but a lot of dealers will do invoice or back of sticker plus price lock. That’s about as good as haggling on new. And you get want you want and not want on options doing so.

Thanks for the advice but that really isn't in the cards right now.

Plus I doubt anyone around here will price lock. I know for a fact VW, Toyota, Kia, Subaru and Honda would not less than a year ago.

We almost bought my her an Atlas. The dealer wasn't doing ADM. I specifically asked if we order an Atlas and they then start charging ADM would we have to pay it. The answer, a solid yes. We walked especially since it would take a minimum of 3 months to get it.

Ran into a very similar issue with a Telluride. Pre rona they had a 7k markup. Rona hit and it jumped to 10k no way around it. I even tried BSing them and saying a dealer out of state was charging MSRP. We were basically told go buy it there then.

What are you looking for?!
So far the wife has narrowed it down to a RAV4 Adventure, Subaru Outback or possibly a Highlander.

She test drove those this morning and so far likes the RAV4 the best. Now the problem is finding a dealer that actually has what they list in their site.

I hate the "Oh sorry, we just sold that and haven't taken it down yet" BS. Shit is already getting old.
