Well I think I got it. I Had checked for any binding in the cable and rechecked the the cable going into the quadrant, but couldnt find any problems-------So I just got under the car again and grabbed a hold of the cable and push it in and out a few times and then I pushed it in and gave it a hard yank out (two times) something gave and I ended up with the slack that was needed, I hooked it up and then got back under the dash to check the cable and quadrant---the cable was still hooked up and the quadrant looks like it changed position but look intact and nothing broken. It gave me the slack I needed. I have about 1" free play in the peddle before I make the adjustment. Must have been something to do with the the position of the quadrant. Going to adjust and try it out in the next couple days. I will get back with a report on this. Thanks for all the feedback.
