We had two shotguns issued to my platoon my second deployment. The SM that were issused them also had an M4 and 9mm. Although most of the times they just took their shotgun while on patrol...was that the smartest thing....perhaps not. Like a couple guys said....they were used for breeching and crowd control...with lethal and non lethal rounds. IMO everyone should be issued a rifle....however you will find that most FOBBITS only carry and are issued 9mm's. I have seen that a lot in past deployments actually. So unbelievable....no....disturbing yes. Im a Armor guy..and have a strict loyalty to the Armor side of the house. In my 12 years of service Ive come to know and to respect the other MOS's and branches of the Armed Forces. We are all one team....with one mission to protect and defend the consitution of the United States. The includes the Infanty down to the support MOS's...weather you go outside the wire everyday...or not...you still play a role in the deployment. Now how productive you are..is all up to you.

I am not so sure the highlighted portion is true. Some maybe, but I don't think MOST. ALL of the guys I work with you would consider "fobbits", (your words not mine) and in the 6 years I have been out here I have yet to see one of the guys I work with, army or marine, carry a 9mm. They ALL have rifles. They are all comms guys network, help desks, sys admins, tech control, satcom etc. for the most part the guys that I have seen carry pistols are officers, senior NCOs, pilots, and some other aviation type guys.

I just had to throw the MP's in there.

AF "fobbits" usually carry M-16's as that is the only weapon that most of them ever see during their career. AF Security Forces use shotguns for less-than-lethal detainee ops but I never saw non-SF carry them. I've seen Army units carry everything under the sun so...

Perhaps...depends on where you are at and the circumstances. My second deployment, because there was a shortage of rifles (M4 and M16) Soldiers that went out side the wire on a daily basis, had to sign over their 9mm pistol for a M4 or M16 from another soldier who did not go out side the wire...ie cook, mechanic, and etc. So yes the shortages have occured to where there were not enough rifles to cover each soldier....hence my case in point.

being in the Navy.. give me a shotgun with 00buck to clear rooms etc any day over an M-16/M4.. but for normal useage, yeah, I'll take a M-16/M4 if I have to.. I do prefer to carry an M-14, but that's just me.. (especally the full auto one a command I was at back in 2002 had)

clearing buildings a shotgun is far far more versatile than a 16/m4...0351's ( assaultmen) carry them for breaching...being a specialist probably means he got the shit end of the weapons.

I wouldn't mind carrying a shotgun in close quarters (house raids), but out in the open... I'd feel pretty naked.

Depends on the units TO&E. If the unit has shotguns assigned to them, I would have to say they are supposed to be used as secondary weapons. To think a unit is so over strength that they had to resort to the secondary weapons.... And there is no way they took weapons from an assigned unit in Iraq, and sent them to another unit in Afghanistan. Those weapons are assigned to that unit. They would move people from that unit before the weapons. I know we have one shotgun and M14 per squad. The guys that carry these weapons also have M4s assigned to them. I know we don't let our guys carry the secondary weapons around when we are inside the wire(the exception being the 240 gunners and our medic). Could it be this guy was just bullshitting you because his unit has the same policy?
