Trans Drum Issues in 2001

Hello All,

I am joining the ranks of a SVT owners hopefully. I was curious if there are any differences in the drums of the pre-2001 transmissions. I am looking at lower mile lightning that had a trans failure and it was stated the reason was for the front drum failing. The trans was rebuilt using a older style drum. Can anyone confirm if this is a know problem in the newer Lightnings.Or that the older drums are better. I am a little concerned of buying a lower mile truck that has dumped the trans . Just want to confirm story.. Thanks

the 01's didn't have a drum issue, they had a mechanical diode that was faulty that would cause them to destroy the second gear sprag. You can do a search on it and probably find some posts, the issues was common to what is called "J1" transmissions. I had to replace mine for that issue.
