In short, I'm planning todo cylinder honing where torque plates comes to question. And as plates are very pricey, i might just do them by myself as i have proper machinery for that.

My question for now is that does the torque plate material need to match to heads? Modular heads are aluminum, but was i thinking do them from steel which is lot cheaper and does not require so much thickness (i was thinking 1.5") to be just as "strong" as alu?

Torque plates are about applying clamping load to the block to cause the same distortion as the heads.

The material does not matter, the stiffness does. But now you're getting into some complex engineering questions.

Unless your honing equipment is high end, I doubt torque plates are going to make much difference. If your equipment is that precision, engineered torque plates should be part of the purchase budget.
