Trying my very hardest to avoid writing a paper. Looking at buying a beater car to take to school. I haven't really looked and the small amount I have there are too many choices. Any good ideas for a car <$5K, >25MPG, easy maintenance, and auto? I don't care about color, looks, or performance will probably (hopefully) keep my Raptor for the times I want to drive something fun. I know people are going to suggest a civic...but I have not found any decent ones so far.

I bought an 02’ Focus off CG for 1300 almost 5yrs ago. Spent $50 so far in repairs. I’ve only put about 10k on it but it never skips a beat.

Honda’s were too expensive for what I needed.

Late 90's to early 2000's Saturn SL1/2, SC1/2, SW1/2. They are very inexpensive and you'll easily get north of 30mpg. I drove an sc1 for 2 years, 140k miles to 170k. Never had a failure and there were plenty of hwy only trips I would get 38mpg average.

The plus with them is they don't get the draw from the normal people that look at Civics and Corollas that drives the prices up.

This all day. Before my Panther, I had a '98 Buick Lesabre that I bought with 150K on it for $1100. Normal maintenance (which includes intake at 175K) and I sold it with 356K on it for $250. Full power everything, great AC, 30+ mpg and it rode like a Cadillac.

And before that it was a '93 Bonneville that I paid $400 for with 120K on it and sold that for $150 with 250K on it.

Don't want to take the Raptor to a parking lot full of dip shit college kids. Plus shit gets stolen a lot here in SA, So I avoid taking my truck to places where it will sit for long periods of time.

    WTF where are these deals?

Great thing about a LeSabre or an 88 is that you can be smoking a blunt, drinking Jack and beating a hooker while passing a cop and he will never give you a second look.

Agreed. I had an SL2. They have a little more power, and a better head. There is a forum for these cars with a wealth of knowledge. Cheap, reliable, and Almost 40 mpgs

Yes, except the civic. he wants an auto, and the auto hondas from that era are troublesome.

These deals just don't seem to be present here or really anywhere close. Thoughts on picking up a flood vehicle?

No! Don't do it. Eventually everything electric will give you a hard time. Power windows, A/C, Lights, etc. Where are you looking? For $5k you can pick up a decent ride around here.

I don't really want to spend $5k, the cheaper the better. I'm going to take a hard look at the saturns. Ugh time to write that paper.

+1 for the Saturn. Had a 93 SL2 for my first car and a 95 SL2 that was turbocharged. Awesome little cars but they do burn oil so be careful.
