Worked for the man for a long time. Started my own business last year. Work 2x as hard for 4x the reward. 2x of that is personal and 2x of that is $$. Best part is I treat my employees the way I wish I had been treated when I was an employee. Big companies lose sight of their most important assets (employees).
Amen brother! I would say almost any sized company loses sight of their most important assets, which is sad.
Congrats on the business and best of luck!

The older I get the more my time is worth
I do 40 a week and dont give a shit how short staffed we are when I'm not supposed to be there. I may a work a day of OT every other month because I have call days
I worked all of my 20s and 30s away and when i hit 40 i said **** that
Pretty much my mentality as well.
Being 47 years old, I don't work much overtime any more. For the most part, I never work OT during the work week, but I will work 5 hours on a Saturday morning if I am asked.

You made the right decision. Some companies have zero ****s to give about riding an employee right into complete burnout. .

This x3500hrs/yr

The days of being appreciated for going above and beyond are long gone. I made the mistake of giving too much time and effort to the previous company I worked for. I worked 80-100hrs+ a week for multiple years, no breaks. I lost weeks and weeks of vacations I'll never have. I developed health issues, stress, lack of sleep. It's not worth it, and any employer that pushes that onto an employee is NOT to be trusted. Short, temporary blitzes are one thing. If it becomes a routine, that means the company has a resource / resource management problem and it's THEIR problem, not yours.

I kept the company I worked for from being sued to oblivion. Kept a lot of people employed. They stabbed me in the back and I quit over it. **** 'em, you made the right choice.

I refuse to meet customers after hours or weekends. They get pissed, but oh well. They tell me they'll look elsewhere...guess what, they seem to find the time to meet me.

Sometimes you just need a break. Sometimes you don't realize how bad you need it until you snap. I'm mid 40's, I don't mind working hard or staying late sometimes but damn it I spent a good part of my life trading time for money.
Last week I caught shit for taking Friday the 5th off, guess what, the world didn't end.

I have been self employed for 25 years .
Money used to be something I wanted , and I have had it .
I raised my 3 children from home and provided them with everything the needed , even some of the things they wanted .
They have grown up to be great people in the community.
Time you can not buy .
At 61 ,I have no regrets .
Sold my 5k square foot home , top of the city, for a 500 square foot home on the top of a hill in the forest .
Peace of mind and soul is all a man can ask for .
You should be able to find something that makes you happy in the new Trump economy.

My manager gets pissed when I say I'm taking a day off rather than asking for a day off. Abundance mindset.

Do what's best for you right now, because eventually they will fire/force retirement/halt benefits.

No, it's not sad. Real men provide for their families no matter the personal cost.

I don't think you read between the lines. Money doesn't buy happiness. One family can drop 10K on a drip to Disney while the kids complain the whole time, while another does a camping/fishing/hiking trip in TN for 2K and the kids leave their cell phones at home. A gucci bag for your wife doesn't make you a better husband. Having a load 2019 Raptor doesn't get you to work a whole lot different than a 2005 F150.

What's sad is a father working 80 hours a week for that Disney/Gucci/Raptor lifestyle and not seeing his family. You can have a family in TN living on 50K a year that's twice as happy as a family in TX living on 200K a year.

Most people forget that their employees are the backbone of the company. You can't do everything.

I just finished a consulting session. I had to explain that volunteers and employees are what makes things run. If you have unappreciated help, you will receive the service paid for.

If I am working for someone, my ultimate goal is to do my job well and make a profit. If I'm not bringing money in, I am a waste of an investment. If I feel like I am a part of what I am doing, and not just a tool, I work harder to see things succeed.

Maybe I think that way because I own my own business. Even if I work for someone else, that businesses success is a reflection of me. I'm going to give my all.

Kevin gets it.

I can't explain why/how it started, but I've simply long learned you can still have a great life while being a cheap bastard. :)

I spent 63 days in Europe on about 6K, which I could have done under 5K easily. I spent 50 days in SE Asia for about $4,500, which I easily could have done under 4K. I've done 10 days in Mexico for $600. I've done 10 days in Madrid for about 1K. All those include airfare, where I sleep, food, etc. Coming up in 2 months I'm heading to Hawaii for 11 days...should be under 1K. The fish I snorkel with, the sun set I watch...those are all free.

Right now I'm fighting the urge of Boston to Rome for barely over $300. I can get to Boston for $100. Do like 6 nights, easily under 1K in total.

I worked for a co. for 19+ years, the standing joke was " 13 paid holidays & no time off ".
It was good money, but had no time to enjoy it.
When a " forced " buy-out showed up in 2008, you didn't have to ask me twice..

With all the 'Workers unite' and 'I'm getting screwed over by the man (company)' talk there is a bit of a budding young Socialists vibe to this thread. Get back to work or you're fired!!

As a young person, i currently have the "grind in your 20's and 30's and relax in your 40's" mindset. Dont know if or when i will have a family so im just trying to make as much as i can while i can.
