I have 94 auto that I purchased new. Currently I have 270,948 miles on it (still runs great). I get 22 mpg (mix of city and highway) and I have used the lower octane (87 or 89) for over three years with no issues.
Rarely do you have to worry about an MTX? HA! As far as reliability goes, I'd take a 94-95 ATX over the MTX. I had a 90 in which the differential blew twice. First one was my fault, I ragged on the car pretty good. Second differential, which was supposedly reinforced, blew during normal driving. I'll never own another MTX SHO unless it's got a Quaife, which now are basically discontinued unless a big GB is rallied.
Well the paseo pulled a little over 44 mpg out of the second tank after the halfshafts, wheel bearings and max pressure tires(and a K&N LOL). Went 294 miles and took 6.5 gallons to fill it back up. pretty cool.
Yes, the first diff was your fault... And so was the second one. You bought one that was "supposedly reinforced" and it blew... When the pin is already broken, it can come out of your case during normal driving. That's generally what happens. It's Quaife or bust.
However, if you really would rather have an ATX, you're definitely going to have tranny problems down the road.
To the guy who said they're cheap. Yep, they're cheap to buy, but bringing it back up to operational status is the killer. If you get one that doesn't have a clean body for cheap, it's not worth it.
FWIW, I just moved from Denver to Omaha and got 27mpg averaging 80mph with the windows down and the trunk loaded down. My Civic got 37mpg with more weight and the AC going.
Well, I got the transmission from someone that everybody in the SHO community knows and loves. From what they told me, it was basically indestructible. Three other people supposedly had the same reinforced differential and beat the shit out of it. Not only did I not beat on it, but it had less than 5k on it before it shit on itself.
I've been looking into getting an SHO as well.
i bought a paseo oke:
edit: also turned my man card in afterwards. lol
