I've had a 2005 Excursion with the 6.0 for the last five years. Bought it with 40,000 miles and currently have 120,000. Up until recently, was used as an everyday vehicle plus towing 7000# camper and boat during the summer months. I won't let my experience with the 6.0 cloud my thoughts about the overall diesel vs gas question. What the 6.0 has taught me is that the diesel seems very expensive to fix when it breaks - cam sensor, oil injection pump, alternator, etc. Thankfully no head gasket issues yet. Hopefully those with the 6.7 will have a better experience. My perspective is also based on non-commercial use - would certainly give a very different answer if I was using the vehicle commercially. From a strictly financial perspective, the V10 would be my choice in hindsight. I could have used the extra $8000 in other ways over the last 5 years. When I factor in the extra cost of diesel fuel vs gas and the need to use an additive with each tankful, there is not much difference in cost over my five year period. I'm getting around 19mpg on the highway and 13.5 mpg around town. From what I've seen, the V10 is probably 2mpg worse that the diesel. You have to figure in $150 every 10,000-15,000 miles for changing the fuel filters. Not a lot of money but it is something. I haven't found the 6.0 to be as superior for towing heavy loads as I expected. Towing my trailer up long uphill stretches on southbound I81 in VA required almost full throttle to maintain 55mph. Certainly impressive when you are looking at approximately 17,000 #'s of GVW but not effortless either. Just my thoughts for those of you who use the truck the way I do - non-commercial with occasional mid-weight towing. Additional thoughts as of 11/22 - I now have 4 injectors bad. Recommendation is to replace all 8 at this point - $3300. EGR Cooler issue now showing up - cost to fix is $2600. I've kept all maintenance up to date - fuel filters every 15,000 miles, oil changed every 5000, diesel lubricant added with every tank of fuel, antifreeze changed at 70,000 miles. So at this point I have approximately $10,000 in repairs for my 120,000 mile, lightly used diesel. When you factor in the additional $8000 is cost me to buy the truck with the diesel - which I will never get back based on resale value on 6.0's - I could have put in a couple of brand new V10's over the full life of the truck. My point is to beware of the cost of fixing the diesel engines - VERY expensive.
