Hey Guys,

@Corbic 's thread sparked my interest on deciding on a 1911.

Currently, I'm looking to spend at least $1,000, but, no more than say $1,300 or $1,400.

I like the Springfield TRP and hear nothing but good things about the TRP series. I'm also considering a custom gun such as a Dan Wesson Heritage or Valor, if I can find one for under $1,500.

I've handled and fired several 1911's and my carry weapon, Sig P938 is 1911 based. Love the feel and idea of the 1911 and now I just want one.

This will be a hobby gun I take to the range to have fun with.

Must be Stainless
Excellent Trigger
Ambi-Safety
Skeletonized Trigger/Hammer is a huge plus.
Would be nice to have tritium sites as an added bonus or at the very least, fiber optic sites.

I like the TRP the best as Springfield is local, and they have a lifetime warranty and I also hear their customer service is amazing.

** MODS - Feel free to merge with Gun Porn thread if you feel its necessary. **

Thanks for the advice in advance SVTP.

I'm out on what's good for $1k, but my old RIA 1911 never let me down. I should have kept it. If I were buying now, I'd buy a $500ish SA.

I have a performance center smith and Wesson that I love but it doesn’t fit your parameters.

Springfield is the best bang for your buck. I own a stainless Range Officer. $800-$1000
They no longer make STI 1911's, although there are a few still out there like at Dawsons if you want a competition ready pistol. Guns Stock Competition Blue Chrome Super
Dan Wesson is probably the best value in a high quality 1911 out there if you are okay spending $1500 or more.

Just checked out STI’s website, didn’t realize they had changed so much since I bought my escort.

1) Springfield or Colt. They're the only two decent consumer 1911's IMO. Whatever you do don't get a Kimber, last I checked their 1911's are riddled with problems.

2) If you're going to carry it don't get a rail.

3) Come in a little under budget and spend money on a Smith and Alexander magwell, new grips to match, and the gunsmith work needed to blend it. If I recall the TRP has a magwell, all be it not a nice one but it has one.

4) Stay away from external extractors.

If you plan on carrying look at an aluminum commander model. They don't shoot as well as a stainless 5" but they're much easier to carry due to the weight. The Springfield only comes in a rail option but the Colt has either. You can carry a stainless model with the proper belt but it's not as comfortable. I carry both.

DW Valor. No question. It is in an entirely different league than any of the others. No MIM and ignition parts are all either Ed Brown or EGW. All others at your price point will have cast/MIM.

SA TRP is OK - IMO it is overpriced but guys pay for it because they think they are getting a poor man's PRO (it is not). DW tightness and accuracy is head and shoulders above.

Colts are overpriced and quality sucks. But they have a pony on the side....

Also consider used Baer or Ed Brown off of Gunbroker. You can find one for 1500 to 1700 if you are patient. Buy right and cry once....

Thankfully you are not thinking of anything made by Kimber.

.

Not to challenge this on Colts, but here's my $.02. I own dad's that's a keeper and I just put about $600 in upgrades into it, and most of the smithing I did myself, but I bought a new Colt Competition 1911 last year and was very disappointed. Fit and finish was sub par, and it had to go back to the factory due to their weird ejector design on their 9mm 1911. And still wasn't quite right when it came back. I won't buy another Colt, and I was a Colt fanboi.

Agreed on Kimbers, too. I think they are trading only on their past reputation.

I haven't bought a Colt recently but I do know that company has gone through some shakeups. It would be a shame to see their quality fall off as all of my Colts have been fantastic. I'll keep that in mind next time I'm in the market.

I meant to also say in that top post to not buy anything but a 45acp. If you want a 9 or 10mm get a different platform.

Great advice here. I have an Ed Brown Kobra and it's amazing. DW makes great guys at a nice price point. They are a large step above the TRP.

I have been on a quest for another 1911 myself, and the biggest challenge has been to find one outfitted exactly like I want, and my needs/wants aren't that peculiar. That said, if I was looking for another 1911 in .45acp I would buy this if I didn't already have one. Thumbs up. Would buy again. Tight slide frame fit, nicely finished, and runs great.

$875 at Buds.

Send it out to a gunsmith and have them outfit it the way you want. It costs more in the longrun but you'll get something nobody else has and exactly what you need. That's what I did....couldn't be happier. I'm getting ready to send another one out this week actually.

I can only offer this...
I own a Taurus 1911, a Ruger 1911, and a Kimber 1911.
The Kimber will never get fired, it is a custom from when my brother in law was in Afghanistan. One of only 10 made. Probably isnt worth much to anyone else but means a lot to me.
My Ruger 1911 just runs. Feed it crap ammo and it still goes "bang."
My Taurus 1911 gets the most time though...thing just sings.
For what I got it for, I am not complaining. I have never done anything but clean it.
My daughter loves shooting it also and it looks as big as she is when I see her shooting it.
If I ever buy another it will be an Ed Brown or Dan Wesson.
I own too many firearms as it is....

Thanks for all of the advice guys.

Ed brown and WC are way out of my price range.

I do like the Valor, but, is is easily $1,500 bucks all day. I may try for it. I love how it looks, but, the lack of the skeletonized trigger and from what I can tell, lack of tritium sights are a small drawback for me. I am sure, I can spend the extra cash to change that out, but, we will see.

This will be my first 1911 and I feel if I get a Valor or Ed Brown, etc, I won't want to fire it because of how pretty and nice the gun is, instead of say a Range officer I am considering, which is under $1,000. The TRP is around $1,200 or so, but, to me, appears to be more "rugged" if you will, compared to the Heritage or Valor. The valor and up seem to be collector's guns.

Keep em coming. I love talking about guns and debating on features and what not.

Thanks SVTP.

Go for the Dan Wesson Heritage 1911 or Pointman 45 1859 part, both +/- $1,250 no MIM parts and excellent trigger. Compare a Valor and Heritage same parts, but Valor has extra features, such as front strap checking and i believe different sights. Great bang for the buck. Next choice if you want warranty SA TRP Operator Black with bull barrel.< Chris Kyle gun.

Also, check out the Dan Wesson Pointman 45 part number 1859 Buds has it for 1247.00 SS fiber optic sight and front strap checking, full length guide rod
