A buddy of mine purchased the first S550 in MS this past Wed. He was able to snap a few exhaust system pics and I thought I would share them.

Factory cats.

As you can see, the passengers side is easily unbolted from the header and has the same type of slip clamps as the "11-"14's have further back close to the rectangular whatever the heck that thing is. The other (drivers side) is permanently welded to the header. This will take some extra work from the after market for replacement upgrades.

Complete exhaust system shot.

As you can see, there are no longer any over the axle pipes, so simply swapping out a solid rear axle will require exhaust fabrication as well. I've seen no word yet, whether the center rectangle thing is either an H-pipe or a 3rd converter, but with heat shielding, I can only guess it's a 3rd converter of some sort. I'm sure someone will post pics of it torn apart soon.
I just wanted to share these so everyone can get a feel for what's going on underneath.
I hope they help.

What is the pipe diameter right after the cats and for the rest of the exhaust? Looks smaller than the '11-'14 models.

Wow that looks like stock custome or full swap only. Not sure what Ford was thinking, even Ford racing sells aftermarket parts for exhaust, they just killed that.

My guess is budget. Seams and joints take time and money ... At the end of the day, Ford's main concern is selling a car cheaply, not necessarily making it "mod friendly," Though i agree they should have their heads out of their ass in regards to the mustang. This just may have been a battle the bean counters ended up winning.

Point is your only options for exhaust are longtubes and / or catback it seems. Kind of took the "modular" aspect out of things.

This is poop. It's the first time I've seen this. I guess I just assumed they wouldn't weld cats to the header on a Mustang, probably the most modified car in American history.

Bean counters, cost, blahblah. It's still poop. :bash:

Seems to me if it were just a "cost" issue, ford would have welded both cats and not on just one side. However, I know nothing of how good a flow the stock cats are vs. swapping out for higher flowing cats. And- not that the feds are prosecuting anyone other than Republicans- it would be a vio to go without cats at all..right?

Needless to say axle backs are a thing of the past. Catback exhaust is where it's at on the S550.

That condescending letter from that secret person, mentioning all the loud Mustangs running around polluting.....and demanding a cat be installed on a header.

lol

One of my first projects on mine, will be a swap to the 11-14 Headers (have them already) and a custom mid pipe (I work at BMR....easy) to mate to my new Magnaflow Catback.

Wish I could post dyno results, but, my first dyno experience will be with a VMP TVS and a lot of boost. Damn.

The pipes are actually smaller in diameter than the 2011-14 cars. That could explain why we've been seeing 30 HP gains from a cat-back.

I wonder I this is on purpose. Waiting to see what Chevy gives the Camaro, then bam new exhaust from the factory and the Mustang is now rated at 450-460hp. Just a thought.

I really think Ford is still leaving some on the table. I find it hard to believe with how loud some other cars are stock that this restrictive of an exhaust was required to meet "noise regulations." One of my neighbors has a C7, the other has an F-type. They aren't exactly quiet so I can't see why the mustang can't have a more open exhaust.
