So, I've mentioned my right shoulder bothering me for the last year, and getting worse. I made an appointment about a month and a half ago with a recommendation from my cardiologist and a few friends. My wife and I actually looked this doctor up a couple weeks ago just to see the feedback. Wow, this guy has some credentials. #5 in the country for shoulders, great patient ratings. Today was the appointment at 2:00. Got there at 1:45, checking in and 2 minutes later they called me. Went back to the exam room. A nice girl came in, asked questions and said someone will come in to get Xrays. Two minutes later, Erica takes me around the corner for two pictures. It was funny, because she said "oh boy" after taking the pictures. Went back to the exam room, she pulls the xrays up on the screen and said the doctor would be in in a few to explain. The doctor comes in, asks me what' up and I explain. He had already seen what was wrong with my shoulder. Zero cartilage left with explained the pain and popping, catching and clicking. Two options, shots that might work for 3-6 months, or replace. No brainer, I'm having a complete reverse shoulder replacement done. I asked, "have you done them before?" Yep, he said I'm doing 6 tomorrow. I need to wait for two of my doctors to sign off so we can schedule this. Wild deal, this is outpatient stuff. Picture below.
TLDR, I'm getting a new shoulder.

Damn, yeah that sounds way worse than my issue I wrote about in LNC. Supposedly the shots are a long term "cure" for my issue but they can't rebuild the cartridge like you need so replacement is the smarter path. I haven't had anything replaced, but my grandfather had his knee replaced and he never finished his PT, the older he got the more he hobbled cause of it and the more he bitched about it. Point being, DO THE PT!!!

Oh, I sure as heck will. Recovery is pretty quick on this he said. I didn't think it was this bad, it's just bone on bone right now.

Sucks to hear this man.

Resistance bands for strengthening and a massage/heat shoulder wrap will help you out big time through your rehab.

Be DILLIGENT with your PT. The more you do it the more range of motion you will get back. But stay in accordance with the PT regimen your PT doctor gives you because overdoing it can set you back too. If you skimp on PT, you will lose RoM.

I've had problems with both my shoulders. I thought it might be the residual effects of having a car roll down on me when I was 17.

Anyway, went to an orthopedic surgeon, expecting him to say lets cut you open. He actually diagnosed it as "frozen shoulder". First time a shot of cortizone took care of it. 5 years later, the other shoulder acts up. Cortizone didn't fix it. I was so pissed off about this shoulder hurting that I just stretched my shoulder in the shower every morning until my eyes watered. But it fixed it. Took about 2 months of stretching.

not at my post...
Best of luck Brad, sounds like you have a great doc.. My shoulder Doc just told me a week ago he suspects a SLAP tear, ruled out rotator cuff with MRI (no contrast), guess he saw something around the labrum.. have pain at the front of the shoulder.. have done a couple of cortizone shots which have helped with pain for awhile, but haven’t lasted… he wants to do an exploratory arthroscopic surgery and maybe bicep tenodesis to relocate the tendon… no ****ing thank you.. I will live with it.

Good luck with the surgery and the recovery.

I don’t know what the difference is between the full shoulder replacement and the reverse one.
I protect my shoulders like a baby and they give me no trouble which is a ****in miracle considering how long I’ve been lifting weights and that I used to do military presses and lat pull downs behind the neck.
Today is shoulder day for me.

I have a few friends that had full shoulder replacement surgery and you’d never know it. They can’t lift too much weight over their head but they are fine otherwise.
It just took time to get their strength back.

This! VERY important. I had my left hip replaced on 2/19 and there was a complication that is still a mystery to the surgeon (who is one of the best in the state). So I ended up in a rehab facility for 10 day after the surgery, and I'm just finishing up the first two weeks of in-home PT. Which will likely be extended to another week. And then I have 2-4 weeks of (voluntary) out-patient physical therapy at the rehab center. In between the PT sessions I get instructions to do daily motion/stretching exercises. It seems like a LOT of PT, but it's an absolute MUST if I want to regain full range of motion in that hip. Despite the pain, I'm committed!

So yes, Brad, be diligent to do everything the PTs tell you to do, even if you're physically and mentally thinking it might not be necessary. And I highly recommended getting initial in-home PT (if available) followed by out-patient PT (if available). But talk to your surgeon as far as what he recommends. A shoulder replacement is different from a hip replacement. I wish you the absolute best on the surgery, and that everything goes well for you post-surgery. When it's all over, you're going to feel SO much better. Be patient! Be diligent! (y)
