I was driving normal in 5th gear low Rpms and my tranny popped out of 5th making a grinding noise. I tried to put back in 5th and nothing was there. Just sounds like a bunch of grinding noise in the tranny. I have 1st threw 4th but the rest will go into gear but nothing. I have a mgw orange shifter. Even at idle I can here the grinding noise coming from tranny I push the clutch in and it stops. Does this sound like a fork or more internal. If it matters this is a stock tranny other then the orange mgw. Help please?

In cases like that, the best option is to drain the fluid. What comes out will be a good indicator of where your issue lies.

It also wouldnt hurt to take the shifter out for a closer look.

5th, 6th, and reverse (and associated forks) are all in the tail housing, 1-4th are in the main housing... your issue is in the tail housing...

i would drain the fluid, as part of pulling the trans... when you breakdown a t56 you start tail housing first, it would be straightforward to pull the tail housing... take a look at the t56 service manual, it will show you how... no special tools to pull the tail housing, now to start pulling things apart in there, some specialist tools (or DIY home made ones) required... you could get lucky and it will be a simple fix... I would not hope much there, but at least you could put eyeballs on target before taking it to a specialist...

I have the same issue. Lost 5, 6 and reverse myself. Lost mine in 6 at about 80. When I lost it, it sounded like marbles. So pissed off!!! I'll be following you to see what you find. I'm betting shifter fork. I was able to limp mine to work. I commute about 150 miles away per week (go on Monday come back Friday). Was about 30 away when I lost it. Got it to work, and it's been there for the past three weeks. Got to get it towed back to my house on a u-haul.

Could be a bent fork (#5 & 6 are aluminum the rest are steel) and/or rounded engagement dogs that locks the gear on the shaft. This is usually a sign of abuse. I would yank the whole gearbox and get it on a bench before you do more damage (a gear popping out under power is not good and will get worse). A T56 upgrade from Liberty Gears or D&D is about $600 plus the parts you broke. A Magnum is an alternative but that will set you back $3500 which isn't that bad considering its brand new
