I bought a new x4 and cannot get it connect and recognize my vin. The company I bought it from asked for my vin and a number of my ecu also.

My car was purchased with a vortech already installed and I have no idea how it was tuned. I pulled the ecu out of the passenger footwell and found a chip that I removed. Still nothing and I now have dashes where my odometer should read.
Any ideas before I try and call sct next week?

I believe the dashes are a pcm communication failure, I would recheck the harness connection there, make sure all the pins and all are straight etc

if you pulled that chip out while the ecu was powered up then you killed the ecu.

plug it back in and if the dashes go away and all is fine again then that means the ecu is blank and the chip is serving the full binary.

In that case you'd have to send the ecu to a reputable tuner to get the vin and pats code copied off the autologic chip and written to the ecu.
