So I am beginning my decent into the madness of Scotch and I wanted to see what recommendations the men of SVTP had.

This is my start.

Cragganmore 12yr

I don’t mind splurging on good stuff and I don’t mind cheap stuff if it is good.

What recommendations do y’all have?

I'm a fan of Isley and Highland malts, e.g. not the liquified Band-Aid stuff like Laphroaig. You're never ever going to go wrong with Oban 14.

Wellers? You mean one of a hundred brands by Buffalo Trace?? That's a nice beginner/pedestrian start I guess, girlfriend.

If I wanted to add something new to the collection of Michters, Wigle, Weller, Blantons, Old Ezra, Bullet, Colonel EH Taylor, Woodford, Basil Hayden’s, Tin Cup, Stranahans, Angels Envy, Belle Meade, and the couple bottles of Pappy I have bids on along with others then I would have asked. I am asking about Scotch.

If you need thanked for your cervix then go start your own thread.

Laphroaig quarter cask is my absolute favorite.
Lagavulin 8 is also fantastic..not the 12
Ardbeg 10 is solid.

Monkey shoulder is a great cheapie.
If you find a place with more obscure selections, peat monster by compass box or any octomore.

Some of the ones I like are:

1. Glenlivet Caribbean Reserve about 45.00
2. Johnnie Walker Green about 65.00
3. Glenfiddich 15 about 75.00
4. Balvenie 14 Caribbean Cask about 80.00
5. Johnnie Walker Celebratory Blend about 80.00.
6. Glenfiddich 18 about 118.00

None of the above have a heavy peat to them.

Anything Islay or Campbeltown. Ledaig and Highland Park are also good stuff along with Oban. If you like smoked bbq, you'll like peat, too. It helps if you've been to Scotland in the wintertime where chimneys puffing peat are abound.

Highland Park 12yr entry level into the peatiness.

Talisker Single malt (game of Thrones special) is one of my favs

Laphroaig 12yr if you want the peatiness to knock your taste buds out

Dewars 10yr ancestor is a decent cheap dram for just getting schwifty off of but with good taste

Glenmorangie 14yr port barrel aged is a fine dram

Try a bunch then figure out where they're made, from that you can find out which region you enjoy and dial in your favs. Each region creates distinct flavor profiles.

I moved on from scotches to mezcal. I fell in love with heavy peat/smoke/brine flavor and mezcals just do that better.

Check out El Silencio, it is my favorite. For tequila it is El Mayor Extra Anejo.

I'm definitely a "Scotch Guy" these days. However I'm not a snob and my tastes run the gamut. I like both blended and single malts, however that shit they suck out of a bog in Scotland and call it Laphroaig is not to my liking. :poop:

My "go to" blended scotch is Johnnie Walker Gold straight up served right from the freezer. I've tried most all of the offerings from JW and the Gold & Blue are my favs. If I'm short on cash I'll pick up a bottle of Monkey Shoulder. That's not a bad blend either.

For single malts I'm a Macallan guy. I usually keep a bottle of 18 year for sippin' with close friends. Back on Father's Day a year or two ago my wife bought me a bottle of Macallan Rare Cask. My god that was and still is the best Scotch I've ever tasted.

Not much of a scotch drinker but my brother had a bottle of dalmore 15 he got as a thank you from work and we crushed it way too quickly.

I liked it a lot.

I have heard Dalmore is a great choice.

Made a stop to get this one for the vacation next week. I plan to sit on the porch of the cabin we rented and sip on it.

Also, since I have been busting my ass at work and killing it numbers wise, I decided to splurge on a special bottle and grabbed this.
