[QUOTE="quad, post: 16620772, member: 17952"] Yes there's the Big Bang theory and then the Big Crunch or the Big Chill hypotheses. Not that it really matters to us mere mortals but I personally think the Big Chill is a nasty ending for the Universe. In that scenario all stars eventually die out and even atoms dissolve. Long after our own Sun becomes a red giant and then flames out many more stars will be born. For hundreds of billions of years or longer (trillions). Eventually though these future new stars will also die according to the Big Chill Theory. Galaxies will become darker and also move further away from other galaxies. If our planet is not destroyed during our Sun's red giant phase it will eventually also end up in a black hole. Trillions upon trillions of years from now all that will be left are black holes. And then eventually even the black holes will fizzle out. With the Big Crunch theory everything reverses and the Big Bang restarts like a yo-yo over and over. Watch this video. It is haunting. It makes you sad when you realize how fleeting our existence is. A billion years from now Earth will be too hot to sustain life because of our expanding Sun.
