I'm not in a hurry sir. I was within the speed limit, and moving with the flow of traffic. My cruise control has been set for miles. If there was a chance I was speeding, it was during a poomt of time in which the cruise control was adjusting itself on a hill.

You're likely still getting a citation, but at least the officer can smile at your attempt.

Paraphrased, but pretty much what I told him. He gave me a warning.

I was recently pulled over in Oregon while traveling for wark. A state trooper pulled me over for going 9 mph over the limit. I had cruise set to 6 mph over the limit and down a hill the rental truck I was driving crept up to 9 mph over (allegedly)--according to the trooper...he also quickly stated that he 'hit me' a second time and I was going 5 mph over. Keep in mind, I was in his line of sight for all of 5 seconds. He kept asking what my rush was, which I thought was a trick question because I was just cruising. In Atlanta if you're doing 9 mph over, you're impeding traffic! I honestly didn't know how to answer the OR State Trooper's question...

That's crazy. 10 over at times for my commute is slow for the left lane. Hell, troopers and sheriffs will cut you off at 10 over lol. Have never seen a trooper care about 10 over here unless it was a work zone.

In my experience, most drivers in OR drive 1-5 MPH lower than the speed limit. "What's the hurry" is the question at 2 over.

Hey everyone. I was just wondering how many people on here are using radar/laser detectors? If you are, I’d love to know which one, and your general thoughts on it. I’ve looking around, reading reviews etc etc, but 1st hand info from “boots on the ground” would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance.

What kind of conditions do you drive in? Mostly interstate? Country roads? Mostly city? all of the above? Those questions are a good place to start shopping.

Example: For me i was looking for some basic protection if I want to do a quick blast up the gears on low-traffic BFE country roads. I’m not messing around on the interstate or in the city. I don’t need all the junk ka filters and gps traffic cam features, so I put those features lower on the ranking list.

Escort here since 1980.

I like having it just because sometimes we do go over not realizing.

I noticed mine now goes off for a lot of other devices which is annoying but good to keep a driver aware.

Like school bus flashing lights
Ambulance
Fire trucks
Construction signs
Traffic signals

The absolute surest way I know to never, ever get a "warning ticket". I would tell speeders their warning ticket was on the box when they purchased one.
Who leaves the radar detector on the windshield if they get pinged AND they see the LEO pull out for them? Anyone that stupid deserves a ticket.

Had two escort 8500 x50s (different vehicles, left the first with the first car) and they worked very well for a while but as others said, it started to give A LOT of false laser alarms. Had one of them serviced for this issue and it started happening again shortly after getting it back. They said it was probably due to the heat it was being exposed to in the car in FLA.

I'm in the market again after being out of it for so long so this is all great info gang, thanks.

AFAIK, only the V1 is user configurable to reduce or eliminate the number of false alarms.

I know the man is nearby when mine squawks.

The Uniden DFR6 also has filtering settings to cut down/eliminate false alerts from Blind Spot monitoring systems and automatic doors at the supermarkets/cvs/walgreens.

Why do you deserve a ticket if you leave the Radar still on the windshield if you get popped? Is it because they're illegal in certain states?

I sure as hell left mine on the window when I got my first ever ticket, the cop even knocked a few mph off of what he laser'd me at too.

From my research, I believe Virginia and DC are the only places they are specifically illegal. But I’m sure they’re universally frowned upon elsewhere.

A radar detector on the windshield removes the benefit of the doubt. An LEO sees a radar detector and thinks that the driver speeds enough on the regular to want to try to hide from the law so you won't get anywhere near the leniancy you would if you didn't have one.

I may or may not have been pinged, seen the LEO come for me, take the detector down, and play nice. I may have even been asked by an LEO if I have a detector.
"No sir, why do you ask?"
Well you hit your brakes right after I pinged you.
"The speed crept up on me sir, I looked down and realized I was too fast and tried to slow down." I left the scene with just a warning.

Never be the first car in pack. When I'm on long hauls I'll do 5 over until someone passes me, then I'll follow them at about 300yds until we get passed and I hitch my wagon to that car. If detector goes off, LEO is pinging the car you're following and you've got time to slow down. Keep a 300yd-ish distance, listen for alarms, and frequently check your rear view to make sure there aren't any creeping up behind you. Pops called this "shaking the trees and raking the leaves." First guy's getting the attention and the trail guy is making sure everything's clean behind.

Let the detector tell you that somebody else is being hit. If you're the first car all the radar detector is going to tell you is that you've been hit and you might as well pull over.

Don't speed over hills or around bends unless you're trailing someone.

Random story
Pops tells a story of him and his dad on a trip, two cars both with CBs, trail car on radio "heads up, you've got a local yocal coming up behind" and the LEO comes on the radio and says "I'm no yocal, I'm a full grown bear (in a deep growling voice)." LEO ropes them both and ends up being a gearhead too, they talked cars a bit and he told them to slow down and be on their way.

Gotcha, I completely understand that. When I got pulled I let the leo know that I was probably speeding 5-7 over, and that I was just trying to get back over to the far right lane to make my turn to get to my house. I think he understood and that's why he cut me some slack.

I think for my next detector, I'm going to look at one with the arrows that tells me which direction the radar is coming from. The escort max 360 looks like a good option

Does Uniden offer a "hardwired" option like escort does? I didn't see one on their site. I don't like the location of the cigarette lighter in the FoST (would have to have the cord draped over the screen and around the shifter), plus I already use that outlet for my phone mount. I hardwired the escort in the Lightning and it's nice still having the mute function readily accessible while leaving the cigarette lighter(s) free.

Direct Wire SmartCord (Select Color)
