Radar Detection - Recommendations?

Hi from Minneapolis...I'm going to take the car out shortly but I told myself this winter that I need a radar detector. I got frightened last October when I raced a ZO6 and shortly after a cop followed us that I put the car away for winter the next day and told myself I got lucky. The good thing is I won the race by a car length just before the cop came into play. Anyway, does anyone have a detector that actually works well under city/hwy driving just for added protection for the times you feel like putting the pedal to the metal? I remember back in high school when I had one but it seemed to go off quite often for no reason. That gets annoying obviously.

Thanks.

Thanks guys..I haven't heard of them but I'm taking your advice. Which model did you buy? The one for 399? Is the technology new enough so that I don't have to buy a new one again ever couple years?

No Planned Obsolescence:
Other detector makers want you to throw away your old detector and buy new. Not me. Nine years after the first Valentine One, I'm still working for that customer, because every Valentine One we've ever made can be upgraded to the latest technology.

My .02 worth: Go with a Bel. I did several hours worth of research, test results, etc., and the Bel did consistently well in all categories, and there are models available that won't break your piggy bank. That said, I will admit that I received mine as a gift from my GF, who decided to get the top of the line Bel with voice and everything imaginable - it even has an autoscan feature that detects city/highway and acts accordingly.

Set the volume up high (you need it to pierce through your booming system) and when that sucker goes ape$hit, hit the brakes. Most law enforcement agencies use some form of radar, and it takes it an extra couple of seconds to lock on an aggressively decelerating target - enough to get you under the limit.

A Bel will give you plenty of warning - however - you have to watch out for that sneaky smokey that sits hidden in the bushes, waits for your screaming yellow sports car to come flying over a hill at 90mph+, and "flips" it on as you get into range. No warning there, folks. When the Bel goes from 0 to panic, you been "flipped". Trust me, as long and you jar on the brakes, you'll be fine. I made a multi-state driving trip last summer, and that mofo saved me countless times, as I watched smokeys yanking others over in my rear view.

Hey, my .02, for what it's worth. Good luck!

Almost forgot - coolest feature on mine is that you can clip it under your visor - complete stealth - nothing hanging in the windows. Also came with a couple of different cords - one long ass straight (not curled) cord that I ran down the A pillar, under the dash, and out right before the cigarette lighter. I'd go take a pic, but I don't see an option to attach one in here. Server problems still?

Valentine One. I haven't used it yet. It's being shipped to me, but from friends of mine they highly recommend it.

Also to be pimp you can get the k40. If I had the money I would love one of these.

wouldnt a remote unit be safer? Laser detection would be hindered with our back windows. I wish Valentine 1 made a remote install unit. Their unit does hook into the cars power directly(as an option).

Remote units mount outside the car.

I heard the Passport 8500 is also a very good radar. From what ive read its the 2nd best after the Valentine one. The only difference is that the valentine one has arrows, but for half the price, you cant beat it. Ive found a couple on ebay for $230, not a bad deal if you ask me.

the passport has a new version coming out in about a month...I plan to get it; its 8500 x50 or
something like that. It has improvements & it can get upgraded firmware as well. I'm going with
it when it comes out in the end of april. I'm gonna get the blue LED one (40 bucks more) just
cuz I like blue.

good luck
