Is the Mercon V really what Ford recommends? I was replacing the bushings on my control arms and steering rack and found that the only way to move the steering rack out enough to get it off the pegs was to disconnect the lines, as the oil cooler was in the way. I reasoned to myself that draining the power steering fluid and refilling would be easier than draining and filling the oil and coolant to remove the oil cooler/adapter. Now that I know what a PITA it is to get the system fully circulated with power steering fluid I realize I should have removed the oil cooler instead. I heard someway say that between the power steering cooler and hydroboost unit that ATF tends to get foamy. I certainly had a ton of foam while trying to fill the system. Is it considered a bad idea to use "real" power steering fluid?
