As far as I know, Platinum and Ultra are being discontinued, and replaced with Platinum w/PurePlus, and Ultra Platinum w/PurePlus. PurePlus is the base oil formulation, which Pennzoil says is derived from natural gas, rather than crude. http://youtu.be/owqkmJPNKwk [youtube_browser]owqkmJPNKwk[/youtube_browser] My thoughts: On paper, the new Ultra Platinum does not look better than the outgoing Ultra. Ultra has a slightly lower NOACK volatility and better HTHS, across the board of viscosities. (10w30 PU 4.8% NOACK vs PUPwPP 5.7%) But we'll have to wait and see some UOAs and trending to determine how it really stacks up to Ultra, which is tried and true and has awesome actual wear number trending and real world shear resistance. The Platinum w/PurePlus, on the other hand, looks promising. Small example, the new Platinum 10w30 has a NOACK of 4.7% edging out the outgoing Ultra, and beating the new Ultra Platinum... and much much better than the 9.7% of old Platinum (For reference, Amsoil SS 10w30 posts a 5.3% NOACK)
