These plugs had been in the car for approximately 400 miles. I pulled them and noticed 5, 7, and 2 seemed to have a lot darker base ring than the others. In fact 1, 3, and 4 almost looked lean by comparison. Rather odd.

So I put a fresh set of plugs in and ran for about 80 miles. Getting pics to show up the way the eye sees them is not always easy especially with a cell phone camera so here's a pic under the LED shop lights.

Then the next two are outside in natural sunlight.

Notice the dark base on 5 and 7. 2 not looking near as bad as the first set I pulled out. 3, 4, and 8 look practically brand new.

What do you guys make of this? I'm not having any issues, just something curious I noticed. This is on E85 and was a mix of "normal" driving and some WOT running.

Looks like those plugs in question have quite a bit of anti seize down at the bottom of the threads...maybe install a new set, keep the anti seize up higher on threads....see if results change

Already been through two sets of plugs. First pic was first set and next three pics are another set of plugs. Same results.

Not much these days, I think about 22 ~ 24.

LOL There's the problem then....get that sucker back up to 28 and blow her out clean as a whistle.

I probably wouldn't worry "too" much if she's running strong and your datalogs are spot on. I've posted my plug swaps pics before and I think I recall a few with more discoloration than others. Pretty much straight E85 use

All yours look pretty much the same though. Where as I see distinct differences in my 5 & 7 plugs. Possibly nothing, just curious about it. Oh and it was 30 towards the end :)

Ya you are correct...I just walked out in the garage and looked at all 8 I swapped a few months ago. Consistent across all 8. Maybe 1000 miles on those.

Pulled your id1000s recently? Any black "goo" on the tip?

Malcolm, how's the oil consumption with the new rings?

Since swapping from gapless rings to conventional rings I have no more oil consumption. I get a little in the catch cans as expected, not much though.

I pulled my ID1000s earlier in the summer and noticed black substance on the tips. They'd been working fine for years though. It sure looked alarming. I took it to a local performance shop and he said all my injectors sprayed within 2% of each other on his machine.
I then took them home and soaked in a diluted solution of simple green and water and put in the ultra sonic cleaner. If it is an injector issue I could swap injectors and see if the darker rings follows the injectors or stays with the cylinder. In fact I'm putting in fresh plugs tonight, going to swap number 5 and 6 injectors quick.

These ID1000s days are numbered anyways. Pegging them 100% at higher RPMs, 6500+, and even at lower RPMS, 6k or so, I'm seeing duty cycles in the 90s. Been delaying on getting some ID1300s because they cost a fortune.

Wow, that baby is making some power to be hitting those cycles

Very interested to see if there's any correlation with possible "goo" and variations in how the plugs look. That would be a real easy "canary in the coal mine" warning sign if just the plug appearance was giving it away...

I know you'll hate to hear it Malcolm but thats how the base of my plugs looked when my valve seals were leaking. It wasn't enough to really crud up the plug like it would have if I had a ring issue but it was just enough to make the ring black.

I thought about that too. Just seems hard to believe the valve seals are leaking. The head shop put brand new ones on when they did the heads and then a few months back when the gapless rings where burning oil like crazy and I was chasing potential issues I replaced every single valve guide seal and sealed the base with a dab of silicon. Unless I somehow got a few bad seals.
