I had a suit made in Hong Kong, I sit in the shop drinking beer until it was finished. I paid a hundred dollars for it, with two pairs of trousers. Of course that was in 1967.

I am a funeral director and have over twenty suits I wear regularly in my closet. Most are between $200-300 but I do have some that cost $500 plus. There are two local men's shops in my town that I get all of my suits from. Family owned and they take care of me.

I have had really good luck with the brand Tallia and Mantoni. Tallia's are very nice looking and the inside material is very stylish as well. I get a lot of compliments on them. If you don't want to get multiple suits, I recommend getting a grey or blue. You can wear those colors to anything (job interview, wedding, funeral, etc.). If you only going to get one suit, get something decent, in my opinion.

Another thing, with a really nice suit you need to wear lace up shoes. Loafers are just to casual. I also only wear a starched 100% cotton shirt, I prefer a point collar, but thats up to you. With a more formal suit I prefer French Cuffs.
The tie rule, usually the least dominate color of your tie should match your shirt, that is not a hard rule but it works most of the time. I sometimes wear a solid red tie with a black suit, Hitman style. High quality, bold ties are "Power Ties" when you wear one, "nobody gives you trouble cause they know you got it made." according to ZZ Top.
I guess if you are going to the trouble to get dressed you may as well do it right and make a statement, it doesn't have to be over the top but tastefully put together. You may want to get your wife involved.
The whole point is when you are dressed correctly you while feel comfortable and confident what ever the style.
My boss was the top saleman for a National Menswear co for several years, when you walk in if he says you look good, you do, and if you made an error he will point that out also. He notices everything. Working for him has made me pretty knowledgeable about menswear. I just like to do it on a budget,

The last suit I bought was from Sears in 2005. It was cheap and not very stylish to begin with, and I'm 40 lbs heavier now, so I needed something new...something to wear maybe once a year.

So I started shopping and found a clearance suit at Jos. A. Bank online. It's a charcoal herringbone tailored fit 2 piece "Signature Gold" suit. I got it for less than $100 shipped after promo codes and all that stuff. I didn't want to spend much, and l feel like I did really well. It fits nice and I like the way it looks. I'm going to bring it into the local store and have the pants adjusted a bit.

The only problem is that I have absolutely no idea about all this stuff. I'm a rube. I like my 40 dollar pulsar watch and my 200 thousand-mile-old cars. Online reviews are bullshit these days. My friends don't know anything about suits either. So for the suit guys....is Jos A. Bank garbage, or is it decent stuff? What do you wear? Why?

I highlighted the most important parts of what you said. Based on this, anyone's opinion on your suit choice does not matter.

A charcoal suit is extremely versatile. It will cover any event, to include funerals, although, black is preferred. The only thing to do now is get a couple of shirts, ties, and pocket squares to create a variety of outfits, if you will.

A pair of black Oxford shoes and black leather belt will pair well and is all you need for what you are doing.

As others have mentioned, having a suit tailored to you is paramount. The fit will make or break your look.

Since you are getting the pants adjusted, have them look at the jacket as well. Maybe the sides could be taken in just a bit to add a more fitted look.
