I walked into a car audio store today thinking I might upgrade the speakers in my Cobra. The saleman said they would not recommend changing speakers only as the Mach system will not work well with any other components - I would need to replace the entire system.

Is this the case?

Yes, the shop is correct. You can add a subwoofer without too much trouble or convert the 460 to a Mach 1000. Other than that you are better off ripping the 460 out and starting over. Instead of using normal tweeters/mid range/sub woofers, the Mach 460 uses 2 1/2 inch tweeter/ midrange and 5 1/2 X 7 1/2 inch mid bass speakers. The crossover points are different than aftermarket tweeters and mid range would use. If you tried to hook up a 1" tweeter to the system it would probably blow shortly from too much bass. If you hooked up a mid range to it you would have too much treble going through the mid range. The crossovers are internal so you can't just change them. The amps aren't that great either.

If you want a better sounding system with more bass, add a powered sub woofer. If you want a great system, start from scratch. Check out these links for more info.
