I didn't want to resurrect a 1+ year old thread and this has a twist so....
I was working at a house in the neighborhood this week and customer and I were talking about the couple of idiots who feed the deer, their piles of shit in the yards, etc...
There's a lot of development, unfortunately, in the area most likely to accommodate buyers coming in from the People's Republics of NY and NJ.
Anyway, there's no doubt the wildlife is getting squeezed out of their habitats which is a tale as old as time -sucks for them.
I was telling her my story of the standoff I had with a buck last year while taking my dog out in the backyard (the old thread here).
She said "Oh, you didn't hear about the neighbors dog who was killed by a deer a few months ago?"
Apparently the dog, a Standard Poodle, was let out at night to do it's thing and the people have an electric fence so it was alone out there.
Don't know the details but it tangled with Bambi and got a hoof to the the head, sounds like. Dead.
I ordered bear spray tonight.
ALSO, I was walking my dog at the municipal park at dusk tonight and saw the biggest fox I've EVER seen, and I've lived around foxes my entire life. This thing was the size of a German Shepherd. Srs. Just strolling across a basketball court with people playing 20 ft away, completely unfazed and unafraid.
I don't even think they saw it, BUT I DID.
Gotta suit up like Call of Duty just to walk the damn dog smh.

I always wondered truly.. ( I never want to see it happen).. we've taken our dog on short hikes but it's still in the mountains.

I always wonder how my 180 pound dog would fare against something like that.

I know mountain lion, cougar, duh.. would destroy him..

But if like a Bobcat, or a fox size animal decided it wanted to attack her ( cause for some reason the big ****er doesn't protect me) what he would really do.

We truly believe to protect her he would kill a human... I wonder how he would fare against a wild animal

Don't know, but I don't want to find out either.I described the fox as being as big as a German Shepherd. That's a bit of an exaggeration probably but I bet it was 30 pounds.Long and tall so with the bushy tail it looked huge.
My dog is 60 pounds and mostly muscle but I wouldn't want her to tangle with it.
There's a male fox comes through our yard couple of times a day that my dog goes crazy over and he's "marked his spot" on our welcome mat at the front door more than once (must be at night). I'm just not winning here....

The only way to fix this problem is to go pee on your neighbors front door.

We have Deer, Mountain sheep, Black bears, Coyotes and the occasional Cougar (not the 2 legged kind) wandering about. The Coyotes will lure pets if you do not have your dog under control. The deer, sheep and bears are not much of a problem but the cougars are the ones that scare most people.

We have an occasional Black bear sighting and coyotes as well, but that's rare ( so far). Cougars? No thanks.
I know I sound like a little bitch compared to what some of you guys encounter on a regular basis. But, we all live where we live and when things are changing it's remarkable.
Florida? Alligators? "No thanks" there too.

where I live it's not the big things we fear...

It's the small things. Random Scorpions and shit like that.

Last night we were just sitting outside and looked at the wall, and 2 scorpions just sitting there chillin... Nope

I would not worry about a fox. If anything it would want to play with your dog.

A bobcat would make easy work of most domestic dogs if they are hunting them. I have seen them stalk and kill mule deer. But they avoid conflict and I do not think that you have to worry about them. Shit, black bears will run from dogs most of the time.

I think you are right though, deer are probably the most dangerous. Especially in rut, they get crazy and will attack stuff just for the heck of it. I wonder what bear spray would do to them. It might just anger a deer lol.

Stay strapped. I would shoot a deer in a minute and worry about the ticket later if it meant saving anything or anyone I cared about.

We've got twin bucks that roam the neighborhood together and they hang out in my yard a lot so I have to peak out to see if they are there before I let King out. They do not fear him or I so I have to make sure King doesn't get curious and end up provoking them. One time, they were on the outskirts of my yard and I didn't see them but King did and he started strolling off toward them like they were friends. I finally saw them and called King back and he stopped and turned back immediately which surprised me because I figured he'd be locked on and determined to get to them.

My neighbor said she found bear crap in her yard a couple weeks ago so I have to keep an eye out for them as well. The wildlife is abundant out here.

The rattlesnakes have been all over too I guess. I haven't seen any though.
