Make it financially impossible to build new, and then limit rents. May as well start building public housing units and deal with the mayhem that creates. The problem with an advanced society is that the stupid don't kill themselves off before they breed.

Supply and demand. You shouldn't rent the max you can afford. You should rent the cheapest that will get you by, while you save to buy a house.

....but a lot of people can't do that due to their low income. They will rent for life. I don't mean to sound rude, but for those, CA isn't for you. If you make 45K in CA, you can probably make close to that in countless other states where you won't pay $2,400 in rent as article talks about.

I don't care how great the weather is. That state is not worth living in. New York is a close second and getting worse thanks to comrade Cuomo and all the dumbass down-staters that keep re-electing him. You should see the NY voting maps.... all conservative except for NYC and Buffalo. Too bad the states didn't have an electoral college broken down by county for the Governor's race.
.... I'd leave tomorrow if the Wife was down.

As the article states , Oregon enacted this same crap this year .

When the mean income is , lets say 45k annually , how could you hope to buy a 600k home .
I live off the grid .
Have bare land with no improvements, built a tiny home so to speak , 500 sq.ft.
Solar , batteries and propane back up generator.
Very simple life , and the cost of operation is generally stable .
    Propane is 2.29 a gallon .
In 10 years i will need to buy batteries , that is my largest expense.
At my age , last thing i want to be doing , is giving my money to the state , banks or the power company .
As i sit here with my morning coffee and bong hit , i am quite happy that this is the choice i have made .
I have more than most , and less than some , but everything is paid for .
Maybe a bit off topic , but if more people were to chose a similar life style , the government would have less control over the people .

Everywhere in california to live is expensive, not just sillicon valley and la. The bay area money has moved north towards where I live and well into tahoe. People just can't afford it anymore and relocating. 5 years ago I never saw a fancy BMW or tesla where I live, now I see them all the time. There's also a lot more traffic on the weekends and during rush hour, people are getting sick of the expense but it's expensive everywhere now. People commute from folsom/cameron park/auburn/placerville area to sac now as it's blowing up. Lot of tech companies are going to nevada and utah, salt lake city right now is a great place to buy in for rentals.

Maybe rents are high because taxes are high?

Nothing more than smoke and mirrors. There is a hidden agenda behind this. This will also not control rent. It will just stop people from renting. Cant rent for less than what mortgage cost and maintenance cost.

Problem being that a lot of people who rent couldn't qualify to buy an outhouse.

Step towards universal basic income, 50% to 100% payroll tax employer match.

In Mexico, a business pays 100% tax on any wages to help subsidize the jobless and needy. I know this is the case in construction jobs, so if they pay $7-8/hr, they then pay $7-8 as payroll tax. Here in the states, federal payroll tax is about 7-8.0365% depending on industry etc

Socialism doesn’t work. It stagnates society and traps the communitiy in a heavily unemployed, heavily exploited bastion.

It’ll stifle market movement. Construction and business markets need market movement to create high paying management, filing, and operational jobs ($75k+ who then buy houses and drive the wheels of the asset economy which creates the need for service economy and legal, finance, etc)

Freezing the economic vehicles that create jobs albeit an unbalanced market, will only lead to further degradation of those living conditions in that area. Real burden lies with liberal government taxing the air to purify the water, and sueing the water for ruining the air so to speak.

The dems need to get busy with market driven work and cut the bullshit Lilly licking artsy feelings jobs for a while if this thing is gonna do anything besides burn to the ground

CA is such a ****ing shithole, it gets worse every year. I understand why people complain about the rent but then I think ....well mother ****er, why do you live in SFO, where rent is $3000 a month for a shit hole 1 bedroom? In CA you AREN'T going to make it in SFO or LA, it's just way too expensive. That's why I live in the valley. Even living in the valley, the cost of living is retarded. Why would I live in this shit hole when I can buy a small mansion in TX for $280k? Starting to pack my shit as we speak. For the rent increase....it makes sense. Housing has basically doubled, and houses are selling within a week no problem. It's a free market and the price is going to adjust accordingly. I do know this ....in a few years CA will be so far in debt, it will basically collapse on itself. The governor is an absolute ****ing IDIOT.
