So I recently picked up a set of 04 cobra heads that have new seals comp cam upgraded springs with steel retainers. The heads look great to me looks like they have been cleaned already but i see some grease which makes me want to get them cleaned again. Should I take them to a shop to make sure everything is fine with the heads, im a noob in this area and dont want to install to find out something is wrong.

Also is porting these heads worth the money or not. Not looking to make the crazy power i just dont know if spending 3-4k on a port job is worth it. It didnt come with a cam so I am thinking of going with Todd Warren for that.

These heads flow incredibly well and FI can overcome any deficiencies until you really get up there in power.

I would def have the heads gone over. Send them to somewhere that knows the issues with the loose seats.

Todd Warren is the way to go

I think you’re local and I have a set of Fox Lake max ported 9-thread heads that need 2 valves and a rebuild. Was quoted $1200 for the rebuild. They have upgraded valves/springs. I gave $1500 years ago and just want to sell them at this point.
BTW Accufab and J. Mihovetz used Fox Lake and then Livernois for his record setting motors back in the past.
Good luck.

3K for 25 hp on porting is not worth it. Unless you are trying to squeeze every hp out of it, skip the porting. Make sure to upgrade the heads to 9 thread while you have them checked. Now is the time.

Where is the grease located and are they dirty?

If it's white and on the valve stems/locks it's normal after a rebuild/refresh.

You can see the grease by the spring in the bottom (grey stuff). Thinking about it they deff need to be gone through since its a pain in the a$$ to install, dont want to be cheap and find out something is wrong when its too late.

I found a shop that will go through and also do a valve job for $475, clean and grind the valves, valve seat and check and repair guides if needed. I think thats not a bad price foe whats being done.

Also whats everyone's opiton on Comp Cam springs, thats whats on there now
Which comp springs?
The shop that checks/fixes the heads can verify for you and I’d highly recommend doing that on used parts before you run them.
Good luck.

Grey stuff at the bottom is probably ARP lube for head studs. That’s normal.

I run PAC springs in my heads. No experience with comp springs.

I ran Comp springs a long time ago. Before they had issues. I'm not sure if they ever fixed them.

unported heads on my car at about 1500 at the engine, I was told that it wasn't really worth it for the $4200 unless I was trying to squeeze out 20-40rwhp extra. I figure that's a pully change away. In retrospect, with the car apart and the amount of money spent, I should have done it.

There are more important things to get done….

Exhaust valve seats on these heads are an issue…getting those replaced is good insursnce.

Getting a good valve job and new valve guides is going to be the best money you’ll spend on heads. Stainless valves are also a nice upgrade.

Porting is probably last on the list…i had mine fully ported and gone through by MHS bc they were already there and they do amazing work but its not really necessary.

Head flow is probably the biggest determination of power production so if the heads need work, that’s the time to port. My built 5.8 was starting with a set of fresh/new heads direct from ford, but next engine refresh they’ll get full port work.
