I use the cousin to Kershaw, Spyderco Endura 4. As both are under the same company. They also make everything from 2" up to 6" for Spyderco

I'm partial to the scallion (I have 3 of them in various flavors), the hand grip seems like it's for a smaller hand but the shape allows you to tuck your fingers up into it on the odd occasion you need to gorilla grip it.
I prefer non-serrated, USA built ones.

Bear Edge off Amazon is actually a decent knife. Says it's made in the USA. Been decent so far

Get him a box cutter with a replaceable blade.
If he really wants a nice knife you need to be more concerned with the type of steel than brand name, in which case, Maxamet is his best bet. You'll have two options and both are Spyderco; Manix 2 or Native 5. I would disregard anyone that mentions a brand but not a steel type.
