NASA Mars rover Curiosity finds water in first sample of planet surface

Sep. 26, 2013 — The first scoop of soil analyzed by the analytical suite in the belly of NASA's Curiosity rover reveals that fine materials on the surface of the planet contain several percent water by weight. The results were published today in Science as one article in a five-paper special section on the Curiosity mission. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Dean of Science Laurie Leshin is the study's lead author.

Isn't this a good indication of microbial life somewhere on Mars currently?

I think it speaks volumes about past microbial life there.

Sure there's water there, but Mars needs women.

+1

Here is a CGI created example of this exact problem....
Mars Needs Moms (2011) - IMDb

My only question is I thought they previously found proof that water at one point existed on the planet. This shows that it exists there now right? If both of those assumptions are true, shouldn't this be a much bigger deal to the world than it seems to be?

not many planets we have been physically able to reach or possibly move to in the future. It is a big deal if you think about it.
you have to remember dale .. he is of the mindset that science is of the devil.

iirc, many planets are covered in ice...big woopty deal

Earth and mars are the only ones with verified water ice.

the outer planets are speculated to be frozen gases such as methane.

given the size and scope of the universe, finding water so close to home is a pretty big deal to those who have the fundamental desire to expand their outlook.
