This project started a while back not really having a direction other than making it fun, fast, reliable and most of all unique. I had originally wanted to go with a 5.4 Shelby motor/trans and was pretty sold on that idea until a good deal on a 2003 viper motor/t56 with only 27k on the clock came along. I went that direction and never looked back.

The car was bought brand new back in 2000 for my wife as her first car. 2000 base model V6, it was involved in an accident, im not sure how bad but a couple of the plastic parts needed to be replaced. I sourced used bumpers and since the car really never sat in the garage the glass had lots of hard water spots and was just sun beaten so I found a good rear window and some side lights from a 40k mile car...

Heres what it looked like when I took it apart..

I wanted to mold a rear wing on and obviously paint the car one solid color.. I had the wing done once and I didn't like how it came out, too round, so I changed it some..

I got a 8.8 from a 2003 MACH 1 and put in a Detroit locker, Moser 31 spline axles, Moser aluminum diff cover, and UPR Upper and lower CAs. I got a great deal on the Eibach total suspension kit (or whatever its called), Springs, shocks, and front and rear sway bars, for 400 bucks brand new..

I did all the body work, and 100% of the painting myself. I have never painted an entire car, just misc parts here and there. Quite the process for sure! It came out pretty good for a first timer but there is some decent orange peel that will need to be wet sanded and buffed out once all the fabrication is finished.

Back to paint... Loaded it up on my trailer and took it down to my good buddies shop. He's a custom cabinet guy and has a down draft spray booth for all his work. A pack of beer and he let me use it for a whole weekend.

Wow. Very cool. Every motor should be swapped into a Mustang at some point, good choice.
Still waiting to see a late model HEMI in a fox body....

Glad to see you got your son interested in cars. So many young kids these days just don't care about working on cars. Probably because they can't put that damn phone down!

Nice color! Glad to see something other than a Chevy go in a Ford. Good luck with your project, can't wait to see the end result.

My very understanding wife let me take up the whole garage (while her car set outside in the cold) while I did all the major fab work on fitting the new motor. Very cool of her haha im sure one day ill pay for that one...

Dropping motor.. I didn't want to lift the car from the level spot I had it on so I decided to just cut the radiator support out, turns out that was the best thing... it allowed me to move the radiator forward and be able to slide the viper motor in and out (like a million times) fitting it..

I had to swap the stock viper oil pan from one off the viper truck.. The stock pan didn't have a rear sump and was basicly too tall for the k member.. The truck pan however was WAY too deep and had to be modified, not a huge deal tho. I bought a UPR 2" drop unfinished K member so I could fab my own motor mounts and steering rack mounts. Pics Pics Pics..

Fabbed up a trans brace.. Used some new stock steering rack bushings as well as later I modified my design and added a piece of 3/4" rubber directly under where the trans mounts to add some more flex..

After the motor was actually bolted to the car and in final resting place I started working on re building the radiator support to accomidate my new C&R dual pass radiator and electric fan.. I built in two pieces, and made it removable so i can slide the motor out the front if I (one day) decide to go built motor... I used the mounts off the stock support so i would have the same type of allowable flex for the radiator to expand and contract..

On to cutting the oil pan apart...

I had to accommodate for the volume of fluid capacity lost in depth with width, again this played out perfectly for welding points (which i forgot to do before i re installed the pan) for the turbo drains.

I am keeping AC on the car, but of course the stock condenser is a no go, so i got this universal unit from Vintage Air. Mounting it comes a little later..

Since the steering rack is not 2" lower than before I bought this MM steering shaft so that i could cut it and lengthen it.. I didn't take pictures of that but it worked good.

Heres a shot of the modified trans crossmember with the added rubber.. And a nice clean undercarriage from the trans forward, Will do the rest after i finish the exhaust.

Ya i agree with the phone and video game thing, hes not totally interested in this part of "working on a car" because its so slow and tedious, but he is definitely into cars for sure..

So after I moved the car back onto its side of the garage it was time to make a decision..... I wanted to make good power, more than 550-560 with long tubes and full bolts ons on a gen 3 viper motor. Cam would be another $1500 along with already building custom headers and all that which would only get me to about 600rwhp. yes that's a lot for N/A and would be neck breaking, reliable, and sound wicked.... BUT that would put me in a bind if i wanna make more power.... so i started pricing out building a twin turbo kit would be vs long tubes, and a cam... not being my first time building a turbo kit ( I built two different ones on my Lightning) i knew where to go to get the best prices on parts.. I was able to get dealer wholesale pricing from a vendor i used on all my other projects for my turbos, wastegates, BOV, and all the fabrication stuff. I went with a treadstone 25x3.5x9" FMIC core and will build my own end tanks.. So with all those parts priced out, its about $1500 more to do twins vs bolt ons and long tubes at this stage in the build so i couldn't justify not going this route. This will get me to the limit of the stock motor at 750-800 rwhp.. ill be more than happy with that.

Christmas brought an MGW short shifter, Made for an 03 Cobra, it bolts right up.

I ordered a custom driveshaft fro Inland Empire. Swapped out the 3.5" round yoke adaptor for a forged 1310 unit to adapt the 4" driveshaft they made. They said this shaft is what all the promod guys are using so im good for a long time with this shaft..

Im using a 96 cobra Hydroboost setup. To save as much space as possible, The slave cylinder is hydraulic so I had to mount the master cylinder to the right of the Hydroboost to get it inline with the clutch pedal. Im using 03 cobra pedals, bought off Ebay. I don't have may pics of all that stuff..

Onto more fab pics..

I got the AC condenser mounted but i did this without having the headlight bracket thing in place and the top line hits, so i will have to move the condenser over about an inch and a half.. Later...

I started making the charge pipe into the throttle body. Needed a tight 90* bend plus go from 4" round to 4.5" oval... quite the chore, but it came out nice. Itll get painted black, as will the rest of the bare metal parts...I double, triple and quadruple welded everything so i would have a nice thick amount of aluminum to sand down smooth without making it too thin...

Still using the stock manifolds, they are 1.75" stainless tube manifolds, i just cut off the elbow they had welded on and will make them fit in this tight ass space.....

That's where im at for now... I don't get too awful much time to work on it but i hope to have it tuned and running by mid summer..
